The debut Laws thriller, Night Laws, was released almost two years ago in March 2006, but was recently dusted off by Curled Up With a Good Book, where book reviewer Kellie Warner offers the following thoughts. Thanks, Kellie and Curled Up, for taking a peek inside the covers! I'm thrilled to see that the book is withstanding the test of time.

"Night Laws is a gritty, breathtaking novel of suspense introducing a new cop to be reckoned with, Bryson Coventry.

Kelly Parks has been warned that she is next on the list of a brutal killer. Something she has done in the past for the legal firm she works for makes her think she is more involved than even Bryson Coventry, who is investigating the killing, believes.

Parks is careful to keep her secret from Coventry and find out for herself what it really was she was involved in, yet Coventry knows all is not as it seems. They circle each other, sexual tension pulsing, trying to find out just what is going on, who is killing young women in a most brutal fashion, and how it is connected with Parks.

This is the first book in the “Laws” series featuring Bryson Coventry, and it makes for a great introduction. Coventry has some facets of the typical crime-story cop – he loves coffee, he can sniff out clues with alacrity, and he works long hours to get his man.

Yet there is a softness to Coventry which takes him just that bit out of the box. He is not so hard-nosed yet that he has lost his belief in the system. I wonder if this might happen in later books.

Night Laws is quite convoluted in its storyline and could have been hard to follow, but Hansen writes well and defines his characters clearly. There is plenty of action, always something happening that you need to pay attention to.

Two storylines running through the novel, one woman murdered and another woman missing both linked to events in the past which are mysteries in themselves. The reader will wonder if and why this murder and disappearance are connected, and the way Hansen brings them together is both shocking and industrious.

Weird clues keep coming up in strange places like the legal office Parks works at, and Coventry certainly has a tough time putting all the pieces together. So will the reader, which makes this book all the more satisfying.

The story is told so as to give the reader an insight not only into Coventry’s mind but also the killer’s, which provides a stark contrast. It becomes necessary to the story to follow the killer’s sick, twisted thinking. It might seem extreme for some, but it rings true and is truly gruesome.

I had a few minor problems with this book. Coventry’s reaction to one character, the biker woman, later in the book is somewhat baffling as her actions seem to call for some sort of reprimand or at least questioning. It seems out of character for Coventry to treat her with kid gloves. Also, the novel is a bit slow in parts and starts off with not quite the bang you expect. But this is a first novel, and a few small problems that really do not affect the overall enjoyment of the book are allowed.

There is much more I do like, including the character of Coventry himself. I also especially like his partner, Shalifa Netherwood, who keeps Coventry sane while being a pretty good detective herself. The female FBI agent is good, too - likeable, clever and someone Coventry is not afraid to ask for help. Hansen has given great thought to his supporting cast, and it shows.

Overall this is a thrilling debut, and I certainly will seek out the other books in the Laws series and follow the adventures of Coventry and his co-stars.

One thing I would like to tell Hansen, though others have probably already beaten me to it, is that the band who performed the song ‘Relax’ was named ‘Frankie Goes to Hollywood’ and not ‘Frankie Does Hollywood’. Though I was surprised by this mistake, the reference is a small piece of genius, revealing Coventry to be a lot more cool and quirky then most cops.

The books in Hansen’s “Laws” series in order are Night Laws, Shadow Laws, Fatal Laws and Deadly Laws, with more to follow. The author is a Colorado attorney who continues to practice law in the Denver metropolitan area, representing a variety of clients in civil matters with an emphasis on civil litigation, employment law and OSHA." HERE'S WHAT THE REVIEWERS ARE SAYING SO FAR

"In this book we find Denver homicide detective Bryson Coventry searching for a missing woman, Lindsey Vail, and Ryan Ripley, a dead attorney—the second from the same office. Normally the books in this series are set in Denver, but this one is set in New Orleans and centers around the world of voodoo and death curses.

Attorney Mackenzie Lee is hired by architect Erin Asher because she was being stalked by a man who looks like a pirate while clubbing in town Sat. night. It is soon discovered that he is the primary suspect in a murder case of Bryson's that happened across time at the same time and Erin is the suspect's alibi.

If that wasn't enough, Bryson has a death curse put on him by voodoo priestess Ida Wrisp. True to form, Bryson is taken in by a beautiful woman, in this instance it is Ta'Venza Ocean.

Can Bryson untangle the suspects and alibis to discover the identity of the killer? Can he and Mackenzie keep Erin safe in the process?

Once again the author has created a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. You won't be able to put it down once you start, so you might as well clear your calendar for the duration.

There are many themes and subplots with a terrific climatic ending. The author is a master of weaving the multiple story lines. The characters are very well developed and the plot is expertly crafted with plenty of red herrings to keep you guessing.

I recommend this book and the whole series."
"Bryson Coventry returns in VOODOO LAWS, the seventh book in the LAWS series by Jim Michael Hansen. In this episode, the supernatural theme is extended into the world of voodoo and death curses and brings back the use of lawyers as central characters to the novel.

It seems that there is never a dull day in the life of Bryson Coventry, head of Denver’s homicide unit. While investigating the disappearance of Lindsay Vail and the death of a high placed lawyer, Ryan Ripley, Coventry has to deal with a death curse placed on him by a voodoo priestess Ida Wrisp. As always an alluring beauty comes into his life in the form of Ta’Venza Oceana, who may be his fatal attraction.

VOODOO LAWS introduced a whole slew of new characters and new locations for Coventry to interact with. In his previous work Hansen used Denver as his main setting and the place served as a prominent character in itself. On this outing we are taken to mystical New Orleans and its back alleys and voodoo shops. New villains are introduced who lack any moral composition and provide an additional challenge to Coventry’s investigation. In addition to new characters, Hansen has also introduced new members of the Denver PD, specifically Coyote, a beautiful officer who is tasked with surveillance on lawyer Mackenzie Lee. Lee is working for her client Erin Asher, who is trying to find out who is stalking her. All of the themes and subplots culminate in a climatic ending that will leave you shaking your head and yearning for the next book in the series.

Hansen is proving himself to be a master of the thriller. VOODOO LAWS is a well plotted and executed novel. Hansen continues to provide a level of tension that seems to be lacking in other series books and provides new challenges for his protagonist to explore the deeper layers of character’s makeup. The careful craft of taking multiple story lines, red herrings, carefully drawn characters and ratcheting up the suspense is not easy to pull off. Hansen seems to make it look effortless.

After seven books, VOODOO LAWS continues to showcase the fine writing skills of under recognized author and a marvelous series. If you are looking for high octane thrills, excellent characters and a rapid page turner, look no further. Be careful, there may be a reading voodoo curse in your future; Hansen has the skills to keep you glued to the pages well into the dawn hours of the night." --Aldo T. "VOODOO LAWS by Jim Hansen: (2009) Do you read mysteries for the characters or for the plot? Coffee drinking serial womanizing Denver homicide detective Bryson Coventry is back with all his quirks and talents. He is frantically searching for a missing woman after finding the second member of a local law firm dead with implications of voodooism and death curses. At the same time local attorney and budding author Mackenzie Lee has her own challenge. Her newest client, Erin Asher, is convinced that she was being stalked. A man who looked like a pirate followed her during an evening of in downtown on Saturday. The same man is apparently the primary suspect in one of Coventry’s murder cases that occurred across town at the same time. Lee’s client is the suspect’s alibi, but if Lee allows her to come forward, will they be clearing the man from one murder so that he can commit a different one – that of Asher. Then there is the missing woman and the fact the Coventry has had a voodoo death curse placed on him. Oh, did I mention that Lee formerly worked with the same law firm as the two victims that are the object of Coventry’s efforts? How are they all interconnected? Bottom line – great characters in a wild plot that somehow all comes together. The Laws series just keeps getting better and better." Jack Quick, Bookbitch Reviews, www.bookbitch.com
"I have read all seven [Laws] books, and enjoyed them all. Like all the others, “Voodoo Laws” caught my attention at the first page, and left me with a question right from the beginning as to whether Coventry would actually survive this one. Not that the author would want to kill off such a good character, but the thought that Coventry might actually die had not crossed my mind previously. * * * Whether you have read all the books in the “Laws” series, or just want to pick this one up, rest assured that “Voodoo Laws” will be a fun read." --Kathy Martin, In the Library Reviews

"What a rush! This fast paced awesome thriller will leave you breathless and awake emotions you didn't know you had. I know it did me!

Will our handsome, courageous detective endure everything being catapulted at him this time? Bryson Coventry was on the move to find murderers who were slaying their victims through voodoo. With each passing day the search for these evil doers brought them closer to our hero. He couldn't seem to stay out of the reach of misfortune. Everywhere he turned someone or something was out to get him. This magnificent male specimen had my heart pounding in fear for him through every frightening incident.

The edge of the seat suspense shot my adrenaline up to an all time high. With each excellently plotted chapter danger and surprise seemed to leap from around every corner and seized this reader and would not let go until the last page. At the closing of the book, I was struck with wonder at what happened.

By mixing a little action, intrigue, uncertainty, homicide, and great characters, Jim Michael Hansen truly brought Voodoo Laws to life and captured this reader's heart through his cunning and masterful handiwork that keeps improving with each thriller. I loved it! An unquestionably recommended read."
"Is voodoo real? Can it actually cause people to suffer or die from a curse laid on by a priestess like Ida Wrisp when she cursed Bryson Coventry? The question is why she was doing this. Was someone she knew harmed by him?

Bryson Coventry, head of Denver's homicide unit, has a new murder to contend with--a dead attorney, found in an alley. He finds voodoo creeping into his case and death seems to follow him from city to city as he seeks answers.

Talented author Jim Michael Hansen has created another story to keep the chills crawling up your spine as you join Coventry in another case. And, yes, he's in lust again with an intriguing young woman who catches his eye from the first time they meet.

This isn't a tale for the squeamish. Lots of action and lots of fun characters to meet. You'll remember Coventry as an old friend with a slight case of never quite meeting the right girl. Could this new lady be just right for him?

And if you don't believe in voodoo, you might begin to wonder why as you read. Mystery and chills aplenty as Bryson hunts and is hunted. A story to satisfy all thriller fans. Highly recommended to readers who like new and interesting plots and characters. Enjoy. I sure did."
Back Cover Copy: Third-year law student Kayla Beck receives a chilling telephone call. A stranger has chosen her to be the rescuer of a woman he has abducted. Kayla can either attempt to rescue the victim and possibly save her life or she can ignore the call and never be bothered again. If she disregards the call, however, no one else will get a similar opportunity. The woman will die.

What happens next catapults both Kayla and Denver homicide detective Bryson Coventry into a deadly world where the FBI has been hunting unsuccessfully for years; a world of unknown boundaries and dangers; a world where, in the end, the only hope of getting out is to go all the way in.

HERE'S WHAT THE REVIEWERS ARE SAYING SO FAR.

"An ominous voice on law student Kayla Beck’s cell phone offers her a horrible choice: If Kayla doesn’t try to rescue a kidnapped woman, the chained woman will starve to death – or take another way out with the razor blade provided by her abductor. Any attempt by Kayla to bring in the police will have disastrous results, warns the man; she is on her own. “You’re her only hope,” the grim voice concludes. “She has no one else. Only you.”

Kayla’s decision sets her along a dark and dangerous path; brutal criminals she had only read about in her law school books suddenly become very real, and extremely threatening. For example, in her attempt to discover the identity of the killer behind the chained woman’s abduction, Kayla is caught after breaking into the creepy home of a Tarzan-like misogynist, with disastrous results.

Although she doesn’t know it, Kayla has allies, including a Denver police detective who is working on stopping the trail of bodies left by the “Razor Blade Killer.” Detective Bryson Coventry and an FBI profiler, Dr. Leanne Sanders, have teamed up to track down the killer, whose identity remains unclear to the reader as the plot unfolds; true to the genre, though, the author leaves cryptic clues along the way.

The author is an attorney who has written four previous crime novels featuring homicide detective Coventry, which can be read in any order: Night Laws, Shadow Laws, Fatal Laws and Bangkok Laws. He writes in a crisp and clean style, using short and powerful sentences which convey the brutality of an evil man at the center of the spider’s web in which the characters are enmeshed. Though lengthy, the book can be read swiftly due to its smooth pacing and tight plot development.
One slight disappointment with the story involves the ending as it leaves several questions unanswered. Also, a “plot twist” revealed by one of the main characters, which seeks to explain the details surrounding the fateful phone call to Kayla, rings slightly contrived. These quibbles, however, do not detract from the author’s clever and engrossing mystery tale involving gorgeous women, lustful men and scintillating suspense."
--ForeWord Magazine (Nov/Dec 2007 issue)

"As a third-year law student, Kayla Beck has plenty on her plate even before a phone call completely changes her life. A stranger tells her where she can find a woman bound in chains, fighting for her life, and says that only Kayla can save her. Should she ignore the creepy call and maybe let a woman die so she won’t be inconvenienced? Should she report the call and risk her own life, as the caller threatened? Instead, she goes where directed—an old rail yard—on her own and soon realizes she is in way over her head. A Denver homicide detective, Bryson Coventry, is involved in the case, too, but he knows less about the perpetrator than Kayla and her new “friends”—other women who’ve been targets of anonymous phone calls requesting that they save a life. Despite some gratuitous sexual content, Deadly Laws successfully pairs an intriguing premise and some solid suspense into a satisfying entry in the ever-expanding serial-killer subgenre."
"You are about to embark on a fast paced journey along with Coventry into a deadly game of cat and mouse, as he tries to catch a ruthless killer. * * * Jim Michael Hansen has a way of delving deep into the heart and soul of his characters. His ability to bring out their actions, and yes even their very thoughts and feelings, will leave a picturesque scene in the mind long after you, the reader, have put the book down. He is one of todays best thrilling suspense writers."
"Kayla Beck is a law student. Life is going along well until she receives a strange phone call where the voice is distorted. The caller tells her there’s a woman being held in a box car, and she’s the only one who can save her and only if she acts quickly and follows the directions exactly. Kayla does so and is able to save Aspen White, but not before Aspen kills a man. They become friends and pair up to try to find the serial killer who called Kayla.

Denver Homicide Detective Bryson Coventry is called to the murder of a man in a box car. Then later a law student is found dead by the tracks. Bryson feels in his gut these cases are related, but he can’t find what ties them together.

Tracking down a car seen at the first crime scene, Bryson arrives at Kayla’s apartment only to find Aspen White. He is drawn to her because she is so beautiful, and they become involved.

When more young women go missing and end up dead, Bryson realizes he is on the trail of a serial killer. An FBI profiler, who is also Bryson’s friend, comes to help with the case. She’s been tracking this guy for years. What neither of them knows is that Kayla and Aspen are also looking for the same guy. Can they find him before he kills again and without putting themselves in danger?

I have to say this is one book you will have trouble putting down from page one. The author has done a fabulous job of pulling the reader in and keeping them there. He has a great knack at switching from one part of the story to another at just the right time. He will keep you wondering what is going on until the last page. There are lots of twists and turns and suspense.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading more. I highly recommend this book! Just remember, start it when you have lots of time to read. You won’t be able to put it down!"

"DEADLY LAWS is the fourth book in the LAWS series by Jim Michael Hansen. Hansen continues to expand the high tension drama that is the life of Bryson Coventry, a Denver homicide detective.

While investigating the death of a drifter, Bryson Coventry has only a single clue to go on. Kayla Beck, a third year law student who is overloaded with her studies, Law Review and life in general becomes the pawn in a wicked game of life and death. They share the same goal to find out who is behind the savage serial murder of young women. An out of the blue phone call to Kayla challenges her to her moral core; “do as I say and you can save the life of an unknown women or else she dies.” Her decision unleashes a chain reaction that keeps the reader glued to 400+ pages of electrifying tension. How Coventry and his colleagues put all the pieces of the puzzle together will keep you guessing and the masterful twist at the end is stunning.

Coventry is still battling his demons; he drinks way too much coffee, falls too easily into bed with so many beautiful women and tries to squeeze in time for his passion to paint. Hansen’s characterizations are what draw you into the core of each of his books. Coventry faces his own moral deliminas – the professional cop, who has a strong drive for justice, but just as easily can fall in bed with a beautiful suspect involved in the his investigation. Can he control is libido and still be objective in solving the crime?

There is more to the series than just Coventry. Hansen carefully surrounds his protagonist with a strong cast of characters who support Coventry and lovingly give him a hard time about his carefree lifestyle. Even Denver is a character in the books providing a contextual and atmospheric backdrop for these horrific crimes. If the good guys are this complicated, Hansen is among the best at getting into the heads of the vicious killers; men of no moral fabric who as easily smile at you or kill you depending on their disposition.

DEADLY LAWS is face paced and well plotted novel. Hansen has once again demonstrated that he a gifted wordsmith and he able to balance the thriller, crime, romance and violence aspects of writing and develop them into a well written novel. In each of the novels of this series Hansen is able to draw the reader in quickly and hold them captive until the satisfying ending is at hand. For the uninitiated, this is a caffeinated, high tension tour de force."

"Third year law student Kayla Beck is flabbergasted when she receives a cell phone call. The message is clear--she has the opportunity to save a victim from uncertain death. To quote the ruthless killer, "You're her God. How's it feel?"

With little choice, Kayla follows the killer's directions and saves Aspen White from a brutal rape and murder. In the process, Aspen grabs Kayla's gun and shoots her rapist. Kayla and Aspen flee, but Kayla is now in deep. She is an accessory to murder if the man dies. If not, she failed to report a shooting. Either way, her law career could be over.

Detective Bryson Coventry is investigating the death of a drifter. His only clue to the case is a rare automobile seen leaving the crime scene. The trail leads to Kayla Beck but her friend, Aspen, gives her a perfect alibi. When another murder occurs, Bryson delves further into the case that winds and spirals in many directions. Where the case ends is anybody's guess.

By now, I would have expected Jim Hansen to reach a sophomore slump. Now, I'm not being mean, but every author has a slump. Even Stephen King, a man I consider a master, has failed to "wow" me with a book or two. DEADLY LAWS is Jim Hansen's fourth Bryson Coventry novel, and I'm still on the edge of my seat.

Do not get me wrong, Bryson is not always a likeable man. He hops into bed with many women and never looks back. That can get a little tiresome, but sadly there are men like that in the world, so it's another dose of realism.

The cases are always shocking. Jim Hansen knows how to keep his readers on the edge of their seats, and perhaps a time or two you may find yourself teetering on the edge in the process. Expect a spiraling plot and some seriously deranged characters, they drive the plot along and make you glad you are locked up in your cozy little house and not in the streets of Bryson Coventry's district!" --Tracy Farnsworth, Roundtable Reviews, www.roundtablereviews.com

"Jim Hansen is more than an experienced trial lawyer, he is a master of the erotic serial killer mystery. Deadly Laws is his latest and best in a series of similar novels set in the Denver area featuring protagonist Bryson Coventry, the 34-year-old head of Denver’s Homicide Unit. Bryson never knew a beautiful woman he didn’t love, literally, and is the classic romantic who easily falls in love with love until the next easy conquest raises her head. In this twisted tale, a strange serial killer captures woman victim and then directs another woman to be her rescuer. If there is no rescue, the victim dies a slow lonely death or commits suicide. If the rescuer performs with other victims until she eventually becomes a victim herself.

Jim’s plots are hairy, his pace is harried, and his stories are kinky. He is a master of Alfred Hitchcock-like endings which really throw the readers off the track and yet are logically explained eventually. None of his books end like one might expect. For those readers who like to predict endings, be very careful out there. We rated this book five hearts." --Bob Speer, Heartland Reviews. www.heartlandreviews.com

"Deadly Laws is the fourth title in Jim Michael Hansen's scintillating Laws series.

Denver homicide detective Bryson Coventry has been called to a railroad yard to investigate a shooting death. He found more than just a man's body. There was evidence that an unknown person had been held captive (by a dog collar) and escaped from the boxcar where the murder victim had been found.

Third-year law student Kayla Beck receives a chilling telephone call. A man challenges her to a game: follow his directions and save a woman's life, or ignore the call and the woman dies. Kayla believes the caller and follows his directions. [Spoilers omitted]

Hansen's plots are masterful and terrifying because they could be real life. His characters are rich, multi-dimensional and deeply flawed. Sometimes you love them, and sometimes you don't.

My only criticisms of Deadly Laws are Detective Bryson Coventry's 'skirt chasing' comes off as juvenile and unprofessional. It makes him less likeable than in the previous books in the series. Hansen also litters the landscape (in all of his books) with what I feel is too much gratuitous sex. Toning it down would add to the richness of the story.

Armchair Interviews says: Deadly Laws, while flawed, is a page-turner that leaves you scared, wary of strangers and breathless." --Andrea Sisco, Armchair Interviews, www.armchairinterviews.com

"It always amazes me how author Jim Hansen writes a book that is filled with the actions of terrifying un-godly murderers, detailing their hideous and repulsive acts of violence, yet pens his words in such a way that you are propelled into a story that locks you in until the final page. I sat glued to the pages reading his latest work, "Deadly Laws," hating the horror poured upon helpless victims, yet desperately needing the conclusion I knew awaited me at the end of the read. Indeed the mark of a great writer.

Unlike our author's other works, that focused mainly on the life of a Denver Homicide Detective; this story takes us more into the lives of two young woman, Kayla Beck and Aspen White. Our story begins as Kayla receives a phone call from a serial killer telling her that Aspen is tied up in an old railroad car; if Kayla can get there in time she can save her life; if not, she will die.Kayla does save her life but not before Aspen kills a man who has stumbled upon her and assaulted her while she lay helplessly tied-up. After the rescue the two women become fast friends and set off to try and find this serial killer before he decides they both need to die.

Not to worry, there is still plenty written about our beloved Bryson Coventry, 34-year-old head of Denver's Homicide Unit. He is drawn into the story as he investigates this man's murder. Getting a line on a car seen at the scene of the murder that matches Kayla's car he investigates, meets the two woman and becomes involved with the beautiful Aspen. Soon young girls turn-up missing and end-up dead and Aspen and Kayla step up their search for this killer knowing they may well be next. In the meantime, Coventry finds out that he may be searching for a serial killer as well but does not know the two woman are doing the same.

I cannot begin to tell you the entire storyline as it has more twists and turns than a mountain road. Characters upon characters are added in, some bringing spice, others bringing fear, some bringing romance and more than one serial killer suspect rises up leaving you totally at the mercy of the author to bring this mountain of mystery to its final conclusion. Just when you think you may be starting to travel on a straight road more is added to the mix as there are some hidden motives behind some actions taken by our characters and your mind will totally explode when you find out the secret that Aspen has been hiding and who the real killer is. An unbelievable conclusion awaits you; or is this really the end of this story? Somehow I'm suspicious that it is not. However we will have to wait and see.

To bring my review to a close I would have to say this is one top-notch read. Again, Mr. Hansen adds just the right amount of mystery, suspense, romance, horror and nail-biting adventure to keep you turning the pages. Be warned, there is some rude-talk and sexual content to be aware of. However, for those who love the hair standing-up on your neck fear; the delving into the mind of a heart-less killer and the challenge of solving one outstanding who done it read; you will love this book. It is a murder mystery that you will never know or even imagine what lies around the next turn; I promise you that. Excellent read!"

"Kayla Beck loves her life as a law student; excited as to what the future holds for her. Then the deep, scrambled voice coming through her cell phone threatened all of that. Next thing she knew, she was caught up in another woman’s obsessive journey into revenge.

Denver Detective Bryson Coventry is the best homicide cop around. It seemed that all the best – and most complicated murders – come his way. True to form, he has stumbled into another one. First it is just a murdered drifter. Then a young law student shows up dead. The two deaths seem unrelated at first, but Bryson’s gut tells him differently. Digging deeper, he finds himself in a race to catch a serial killer.

This is the fourth book in the author’s series of “Laws” books. Having read the other three, I have to say when I heard there was a fourth I was a bit skeptical that Mr. Hansen could keep up the same pace and mystery that the previous books had.

“O ye of little faith,” keeps running through my head. How could I have ever doubted that the author was up to the task? Not only did I learn a few new things about him, I got to fall in lust again with the same sexy and intriguing Bryson I had met before. One thing that still amazed me is the way this Detective attracts women. He is never content with just working through the mysteries of his cases, but continually wanders through the ever-changing mystery of women. (And they always seem to be beautiful women.)

Just as with the previous three books, this one grabbed me from the first page. My habit is to go through a book a few chapters at a time. With this one, I sat down just after dinner, and other than a couple of breaks, I finished it the same night (actually it was the next morning). The story does not get boring or bogged down in details. This author has a great knack for going just deep enough into one area and then shifting to another just at the right time. This technique also helps to build the tension. And believe me – there is tension.

Should you read this book? Yes, definitely. I have said this before about this author’s other works and it still applies now; turn off your crime thrillers on television and tune-in to this book." --Kathy Martin, In the Library Reviews. www.inthelibraryreviews.net

"Talented author Jim Michael Hansen keeps the many subplots and characters moving in a delicate balancing act that tightens the noose around a serial killer as victims, killer and Bryson Coventry cross paths, often missing each other. This is a thriller that will have you looking in one direction while the killer is doing something else.

I'm pleased to recommend this tale to any thriller or mystery fan. The imaginative departure from the time-tried plotlines will satisfy and have readers looking for other books by this author." --Anne K. Edwards, New Mystery Reader Magazine, www.newmysteryreader.com
"DEADLY LAWS by Jim Hansen: Fourth in the Law series, drawing us again into the life and work of hard charging, coffee drinking, womanizing, homicide solving Denver detective Byson Coventry. A man is abducting women, and then calling other women to go rescue them. If the proposed rescuer refuses, the abducted woman dies. ... HERE'S WHAT THE REVIEWERS ARE SAYING SO FAR.

"*** The cast makes the latest Coventry police procedural into what should be considered one of the best investigative tales of the year as the white sexual slave market seems genuine due to the secondary characters; many of whom are the bad guys. Ja’Von is terrific as she lives for vengeance whereas her idealist attorney is the “Mouse that Roared” especially when she is almost swallowed up by a corrupt international law firm ... BANGKOK LAWS is a superior thriller that showcases the talent of one of the genre’s better authors." --Harriet Klausner, Genre Go Round Reviews. Full review here.

"There’s no other way to say it, I’m hooked on Bryson Coventry and the man who brought him to life. Hansen’s characters change with each story and are so full of life and so vivid that unfortunately, I can never put one down until it’s finished. This story deals with Bangkok white slavery and a mega law firm. As usual, he is working on more than one case and they begin to collide as the body count rises. Naturally it wouldn’t be truly Coventry if he didn’t have a string of females at his beck and call but maybe Ja’Von will be different and the start of a long romance. No matter how it plays out, Hansen continues to be the best and I’ll continue to recommend him to all my friends." --Andra Tracy, Out Word Bound Books, Indianapolis, IN

"Bryson Coventry's latest case is proving to be quite distracting to his latest romance with a mystery woman named Ja'Von Deveraux. This time it is Ja'Von who tracks him down and reveals she is a private investigator and a big fan of Bryson's. She wants to get to know him much better. While he's enjoying her attention, Bryson does wonder about her past, as his track record with women isn't great.

Paige Alexander is fresh out of law school but placing low in her class has kept the job offerings from pouring in. When Ja'Von Deveraux approaches her with a horrifying case, Paige accepts the job but soon realizes that she may be way out of her leagure. Ja'Von has been in Bangkok hired by an unknown person from a number that links back to the high-profile law firm Vinson & Botts. While in Bangkok, she was drugged and forced into slavery in a sex dungeon. After escaping, she began looking into the person who gave her this job. She is certain she was set up and she feels it was by someone at Vinson & Botts so she wants to sue and Paige is the person for the job.

While Bryson is kept busy with one murder after another, Ja'Von and Paige begin unraveling a case that may put them on the killer's list. A killer who is determined that he will not be caught and that everyone is the enemy.

Within BANGKOK LAWS, the reader knows all of the key players from the start, including the killer, but there are other secretive characters that keep the reader on the edge of his or her seat waiting for things to unravel. This mystery is not easy to solve ahead of time, Jim Hanson is brilliant at creating so many twists without going off track or boring the reader in numerous details. Though there is a lot going on at once, the action hooks the reader from the start.

BANGKOK LAWS is another excellent mystery and I find myself amazed at both how quickly the author can write and how he's yet to hit that dreaded "sophomore slump." Few authors can handle what Jim Hansen has managed--this is his fifth novel and he's still "wowing" his readers." --Tracy Farnsworth, Roundtable Reviews

"In BANGKOK LAWS Jim Hansen has once again challenged his protagonist to new heights. BANGKOK LAWS is the 5th book in the highly regarded LAWS series and the best to date.

Denver detective Bryson Coventry makes a promise to dead woman to find her killer. He hasn’t done this in a long time and is determined to solve the meaningless death of this woman. Along the way other women disappear and are found dead. Is a serial killer loose or are these unrelated deads just mere coincidental?

Newly licensed attorney Paige Alexander can’t find a job in the Denver law community and has to work as a waitress to make ends meet. One day in walks Ja’Von Deveraux, a mysterious beautiful woman with an equally amazing story of sexual slavery in Bangkok to tell. Paige accepts Ja’Von as her first client and starts the legal wheels turning in a David vs. Goliath legal battle against one of the largest international law firms on behalf of her new client. Little does she know that her own life is soon to be in danger. While Paige is busy with the legal research Ja’Von seeks out Coventry. The over caffeinated Coventry is immediately smitten and falls head over heals with Ja’Von. As Coventry investigates the endless trails of missing/dead women, Ja’Von, a PI in her own right, starts her own investigation into the international sex slavery of blond American women to Bangkok only to discover that there may be more to it than she originally thought.

Hansen continues to draw readers to the dark side of Denver and allow us, the readers, to participate in the terror that a few unsavory characters can unleash on the public. He taunts us with red herrings and when you reach the climax of the novel the ending is unsuspecting but so obvious at the same time. As the series progress from the first novel NIGHT LAWS to the current one, Hansen further probes the life of Coventry, a well drawn character that is liked and respected by his peers. Hansen also draws upon a strong supporting cast which adds a rich texture and sense of realism to the novels. But Hansen is at his best in developing the psyche of the villains in his novels. Not all of the bad guys are murders and con artists. An international law firm is unscrupulous in determining the way it practices law. The heroine Paige Alexander is an idealist and has use her wits to be careful not to be swallowed up by the power that the law firm can bring upon her. Hansen paints an excellent balance in ideal versus realism in his narrative.

BANGKOK LAWS is Hansen’s best effort to date. It is white knuckle page turner of a novel that keeps you glued to the page and with paper cuts on your fingers. If this is the first book that you read in the series, you will not be disappointed. Hansen masterfully weaves the elements of suspense, sexual tension, retaliation and horror so well that you are unaware that a few hours have past and your done with the book. Bryson Coventry is one of the best characters in modern thriller/detective fiction in the last five years." --Aldo Calcago (Mystery Dawg) for Future Mystery Anthologies Magazine, FMAM.biz.

"From the seedy sex dens of Bangkok to the crystal clear skies of Denver, Jim Michael Hansen takes you on a voyage into a very dark world of sexual slavery, and ultimately, cold-blooded murder.

Bryson Coventry is the Detective in charge of the homicide unit for the Denver Police. His world is jarred into the surreal when he meets Private Investigator Ja'Von Deveraux. She is the most beautiful woman he has ever met--and she wants him badly.

Paige Alexander is a fresh-faced young woman. Having just received her law license from the Colorado state bar, she is ready to practice, send the bad guys away and make a name for herself. Unfortunately for her, she is unemployed in her profession and is barely scratching out a living as a waitress in a Denver greasy spoon. Then she meets Deveraux, who wants to hire her to represent her in a case against one of Denver's most prestigious law firms.

Dylan Joop is a professional, merciless assassin. His current contract must be completed within a specific time period. His target is an unassuming self-employed housekeeper, with no criminal record, no relations with crime whatsoever, and would be otherwise unnoticeable in society. He kidnaps her and waits for instructions.

The disparate stories are expertly woven together in a raunchy, blood-spattered tale that spins out of control as Detective Coventry and his partner Shalifa Netherwood track the unknown assassin and clean up his trail. As the body count mounts, the Detectives find themselves getting closer, but the clues are scattered, the killer is deviously proficient--leaving the Denver cops with little to go on.

Jim Michael Hansen has a unique ability to tempt the reader with a trail of crumbs that ultimately sucks you into the spellbinding vortex he has created in Bangkok Laws. You will turn the pages so fast your fingers will bleed. Not since Stephen King have I read an author that has the ability to reach the deepest recesses of the criminal mind. Spooky.

Armchair Interviews says: A very complex and realistically brutal plot, it might have been ripped from the headlines of the Denver Post!" --Jeff Foster, Armchair Interviews

"Twenty-five year old Page Alexander's life was about to change, although she would have never dreamed the road she was about to travel would be a nightmare. She had already learned that Denver didn't have many jobs for a newly licensed attorney, so when she was approached by a mysterious woman who wanted to hire her for an even more mysterious job she decided to give it a go, never realizing from that moment on her life would be in danger. As her new boss Jo'Von Deveraux revealed her story of being forced into sexual slavery in Bangkok, and the plot she had conceived to seek her revenge, Page was horrified but still felt drawn to continue.

In the meantime Denver's Detective Bryson Coventry is again up to his neck in missing women and dead bodies that involve the same sinister people that had enslaved Jo'Von.This connection draws our Detective Coventy to our amature detectives, Page and Jo'Von.. The two women, Jo'Von and Page set out on a quest to find the ones behind these kidnappings before another woman is destroyed, never realizing how deep this would take them into horrifying crimes. Will they be too late? This leads them to some very unscrupulous people and the story keeps you scratching your head not knowing are they friend or foe to our young women; just who can they trust? How many near death situations can they encounter? The pace quickens!

I'm not going to reveal a lot about the storyline of this novel. Mainly because to me it is much more complex than any of Mr. Hansen's previous works. Now, understand this is a good thing, because he gives you layer upon layer of mystery, suspicion, suspense and continues to build upon the total insanity and horror of the actual story and players behind the hideous crimes being committed. The story becomes so intense at times that you wonder how much further it can go without having an ending, but it does. As always, Mr. Hansen's characters are extremely well defined, however, please be forewarned before reading that there is strong sexual content in this work and strong uncensored language.

Indeed, you will find a storyline that is probably more real-to-life than you care to imagine, strong believable characters, both hideous and lovable, and a knock-out conclusion, that trust me, you definitely will never see coming. Another top-of-the-line winner for Mr. Hansen and one you do not want to miss.
This exceptional in-depth, tension grabber is perfect for night reading or any time of day you want to curl up with a good book. A surprise visitor comes on the scene.
Another killer is on the loose. Alan Ewing is on his way back to Denver from Bangkok. Will he reach his destination, or will something or someone intercept him? Will Bryson Coventry, a 34-year-old Denver homicide detective, find the killer before further bloodshed can take place?

Page Alexander, an entry-level attorney, with no office or clients, was working at Sam's Eatery until something better came along. Little does Page realize that she is about to stumble into a heart-pounding situation involving a thrill ride that she will never forget.

Jim Michael Hansen is about to unleash another electrifying laws book that will keep you, the reader, turning page after spine-chilling page to see what lies around the next curve. So get ready to follow Coventry through a never-ending roller coaster ride of events that will lead through a fantastical situation, along with the beautiful women who are involved up to their necks."
"Each time I get into one of Jim Michael Hansen’s books, I feel like I am putting on my old comfortable pair of tennis shoes. The only difference is that my shoes go where I want to go. With the “Bryson Coventry Thrillers,” I am never sure where my journey will end.

Bryson Conventry, head of the Denver Homicide Division, is confronted with a killing that should seem cut and dried. A guy stabbed in his bedroom. Bryson figures it should be pretty easy. Instead, it ends up intersecting him with two very interesting women.

The first is Paige Alexander. She is a newly licensed lawyer who is currently working as a waitress. The Denver legal market is turning out to be a bit harder to crack than she thought it would be. But Paige’s luck is about to change when she meets the second woman, Ja’Von Deveraux. A beautiful private investigator from San Francisco. Ja’Von wants to hire Paige to help her go after the largest law firm in the city. This law firm had sent the P.I. to Bangkok to do surveillance. Instead, Ja’Von ended up being forced into the sex slave trade. And Ja’Von is sure the firm had something to do with it.

To complicate matters, Bryson is finding himself falling for Ja’Von. The beautiful P.I. is falling for Bryson also, but does not want to tell him the real reason why she is in the city.

Avid readers have their favorite authors and this one has become one of mine. The style of each book is the same, but the plot twists and turns are uniquely different from one another. This is the fifth book in the series and the luster is still there.

Bryson Conventry is just as interesting now as he was in “Night Laws” – Hansen’s first book. Especially the women he meets. They just seem to get more beautiful with each new story. The characters that surround Bryson have not lost their luster either. They all come off the pages as living, breathing people.

The best part of Hansen’s writing is that I get dropped into the depths of the story within two or three pages. As with most of the series, I started and finished this book in one sitting.

I whole-heartedly recommend reading “Bangkok Laws.” It is great, whether or not a person has read the other “Laws” books." --Kathy Martin, In the Library Reviews

"BANGKOK LAWS by Jim Hansen: Thirty four year old Bryson Coventry, head of Denver’s homicide unit and serial womanizer, has survived four previous outings but this one may be his undoing, as he becomes involved in the collateral damage of a global killer. Newly licensed attorney Paige Alexander is employed on her very first case. It involves a deadly high-stakes international conspiracy that first manifested itself in Bangkok and will end who knows where. The connection between Alexander and Coventry is San Francisco private investigator Ja’Von Deveraux who combines a lifeguard’s body with movie star features. Deveraux has survived a terrible experience and is now looking for revenge. She enlists Alexander to help her and then Coventry. Not for the weak hearted but full of action and coffee drinking, crime solving Coventry and his cast of cohorts continue to evolve with each outing. Rough as the Rockies, but also refreshing. Can’t wait for the next in the series." --Jack Quick, Bookbitch Reviews

"If you're planning to travel to Bangkok to sample some of the sleazy and forbidden entertainments found there, beware that it doesn't cost more than you are willing to pay. Like Alan Ewing did.

It's his mysterious murder that brings Bryson Coventry into contact with a lovely P.I. who deliberately seeks him out. The question is why? Would you trust her? Would you trust her story? Is she as she appears to be? Where will she lead Bryson and the reader who follow so willingly?

Familiar characters who will be easily recalled from other "Laws" stories guide us into the realm of shady dealings by an international law firm where almost any fantasy or case can be won by manipulating people. Bangkok Laws is a study of methods of revenge by victims of this firm.

Highly recommended as a tale you will have to finish once you begin to read. Talented author Jim Michael Hansen has woven a fascinating plot from several subplots to satisfy even the pickiest thriller fan. Action aplenty with false trails and red herrings to draw the reader into dead ends and keep us trying to out guess the villains who do what they do sooo well. A book guaranteed to hold your attention and provide you with reading satisfaction. Enjoy. I sure did. (But a warning to the girls, don't travel to Bangkok unescorted.)"
HERE'S WHAT THE REVIEWERS ARE SAYING SO FAR.

"Bryson Coventry is a cop who is slightly irreverent and pushes the button. Investigating a murder, he meets Tianca Holland, a beautiful bi-sexual ex lover of the victim. Tianca comes on string to Bryson, answering the door in just a flimsy silk shirt. She comes on to Bryson who is having difficulty not having sex with her. Across town, newly sworn in attorney, Haley is getting ready for her new job. When she arrives, she seeks out Renee Rand, who had been her mentor when she had clerked for the law firm years earlier. But Renee wasn’t seated at her desk, a young Asian lady was. And that’s where she learned that her mentor and had been missing now about five months.

Christina now sits at Renee’s desk.

Jack Degan began scouting his next prey, Mia, a tattoo artist in Pueblo .
Haley’s new law firm consists of approximately 123 attorneys and at least one other city. Austin Gray is the big man, the senior partner and to Haley’s surprise, he invites her to lunch. She asks him about Renee, but he tells her it is the hands of the police. This just isn’t good enough for Haley and she proceeds to investigate on her own.

In the meantime, another body is found, close to the first body. This gets Haley thinking about body dumps, so she goes to the site, in a rain storm, to discover indeed a third body. Well, not exactly a body, but the head of her mentor and friend Renee. Haley makes an anonymous phone call to the police.

In the meantime, Degan gets in a bar fight with a biker, falls in love with a hooker and captures his prey, Mia. Degan is taking orders from someone, who tells him who to take and then to clean up the mess.

FATAL LAWS is a book with multiple main characters whose lives intersect in deceit, sexual manipulations, and murder. Why was Renee murdered? Who murdered Renee? Who murdered the others? Who is the “Big Boss”? You’ll have to read FATAL LAWS for the answers, but what I will tell you is that, FATAL LAWS is a fast, easy read through maze of characters that connect in odd and interesting ways. At first, I thought there might be too many main characters, but no, not at all. Jim Michael Hansen, has written in a way that it is clear which character is working, what is going on and how it all fits with the rest of the package. Very well done. Very enjoyable. It is a graphic thriller and not a cozy. I read it in one sitting, enjoying it immensely; however, I was a tad bit disappointed in the ending. Just my preference. On a scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 4.5." --Cynthia Lea Clark, Psy.D. for Futures Mystery Anthology Magazine (Nov. 07 edition)

"Denver homicide detective Bryson Covenry senses something different about his curent case involving the murders of four young women. Part of the difference is that one of the suspects, a mysterious woman named Tianca, is getting under Coventry's skin in the most inappropriate of ways. Another difference is the mixed message being sent by the victims. Are they victims of a serial killer, as it first appears, but if so, why were they all killed in different ways. Baffled, Covenry and steadfast colleague Shalifa Netherwood grind their way through the evidence. Meanwhile, a young law associate who had once worked with one of the victims inadvertently involves herself with the investigation, possibly to her own peril. At times, Hansen ladles on the sex and violence with a bit of heavy hand, but he builds suspense effectively, and his hero is both likable and multidimensional. A too-little-known hard-boiled series that deserves attention."

"Denver homicide detective Bryson Coventry is knee-deep in corpses. When he finds four brutally murdered women’s bodies buried near each other in shallow graves, he begins his search for the diabolic murderer or murderers. Each victim has been killed in a different way. One had her eyes gouged out while another was decapitated. Victim three died by multiple stabbings, the fourth by suffocation.

Tianca Holland is bisexual and the main suspect in the murder of Angela Pfeifer, her ex- lover, whose body was one of those found by the railroad spur. Tianca also becomes the main squeeze in Bryson’s life, defying all police regulations. Bryson is irresistibly drawn to this sexy and edgy woman.

Hayley Wilde is a young attorney who once clerked for and is now employed by Hart, Sanders & Day, LLC. The only one who took an interest in her when she clerked there last summer was female attorney, Renee Rand. Hayley hopes to return some kindness to Renee when she joins the same firm.

Hayley soon discovers that Renee no longer works for the firm: she went missing in April – five months ago. The firm hired private investigators when the police couldn’t find any solid leads, but the P.I.s came up empty-handed, too. Hayley can’t stop puzzling over Renee’s disappearance and begins her own investigation but is warned off by senior partner Jacqueline Moore, who claims it could bring negative attention to the firm. There appears to be more than meets the eye when Moore is around. Eventually there is some head-butting between Hayley and Moore, resulting in Hayley telling Moore where to put the job. Austin Gray, another senior partner in the firm, coaxes Hayley back to work.

Jack Degan is a murderer for hire. His boss, Swofford doesn’t seem to have a problem finding “customers” who want someone else done away with. Strangely, Degan commits the murders almost without feeling, yet he becomes emotionally involved with a whore, Gretchen. Gretchen knows nothing of his real vocation.

Fatal Laws follows Night Laws and Shadow Laws, all authored by the cunning Jim Hansen. Each novel is able to stand alone as a Bryson Coventry thriller, although collecting them all is ideal for thrill-seekers. Fast paced with an ever-building hunger-to-know, Fatal Laws is sure to satisfy. The surprise ending is an added bonus to this well-written and stimulating read." "Hansen continues to write the best mystery thrillers. You’ll be glad
to know Bryson Coventry is at it again, only this time he has two
bodies to contend with. *** As usual, Coventry becomes involved with one of the suspects, Tianca. One of the victims happens to be a close friend of Haley Wilde, a lawyer with the ink still wet on her diploma but she’s determined to find the killer. The solution is totally unexpected and that’s just what you get when you read one of Hansen’s books."
"Homicide detective Bryson Coventry has four seemingly related murders to investigate. The bodies were all found together near a railroad spur, each killed in a different way. The first death implicates Tianca Holland, but the others absolve her of the crimes. Bryson has only a few clues, some coming from the vandalized apartment of Haley Wilde, a new attorney at the firm where one of the women worked.

Haley Wilde has pursued her own investigation of Renee Rand’s disappearance, despite official discouragement from her firm. She discovers Renee’s body by the railroad, and still pursues the clues she find to track Renee’s killer. Meanwhile Tianca is trying to lure Bryson into her bed, but he resists, if just barely. Another man keeps burning the highway between Denver and Pueblo, setting up snatches of women. What’s going on?

FATAL LAWS is Jim Michael Hansen’s third thriller featuring Bryson Coventry, and it’s another electric novel. Hansen may remind readers of John Grisham with his crisp plots, sharp dialogue and keen characterizations. The action never lags, and once you start the book, it’s hard to put down. Two more books are planned for the series, so Hansen is a talent to look for." Jean Hanke, Reader to Reader Reviews
"Fatal Laws is the third thriller in Law series.
Hansen is an author with a publishing dream. He is determined to write thrillers without the 'necessary' help from agents or New York publishers. Hansen is showing the publishing world that with a sizzling book and a good marketing plan, viable titles can be written and sold--and a fan following can be achieved.

When a body is found in a shallow grave, Denver homicide detective Bryson Coventry, 'catches' the case. During the initial investigation, Coventry finds another body buried not far from the first. A new attorney, Haley Wilde, is quietly investigating the disappearance of a friend. On a hunch, she visits the burial scene of Coventry's case where two more bodies are unearthed.

One of the women who died is linked to the wealthy and beautiful Tianca Holland, who becomes a suspect. Coventry is more than a little attracted to Tianca and as usual, he becomes caught up in her life.

Coventry is a womanizer, but you love him anyway as his heart is always with the victims--and solving the crime is foremost in his mind.

The body count is rising and Coventry and his partner Shalifa Netherwood's investigation of the murders intersect with attorney Wilde's. The race is on to find the brutal killer and prevent more deaths. No one is really who you think they are--and the appetites and secrets of some of Denver's most visible citizens are more than dangerous--especially when they are aided by people without any moral compass.

Hansen has become one of my favorite thriller authors. His writing is crisp and clean and his plots are scintillating. After reading a Law series novel, I find myself checking the doors and windows to make sure they're locked, and I am always on the lookout for a maniacal killer who might be stalking me.

Hansen leaves us with a big question in this novel, and I'm hoping for the answer in an upcoming book. If not, it will be a big disappointment. I can't wait for the next Law book.

"FATAL LAWS is the third book in the Bryson Coventry franchise. In each successive outing Hansen has place Coventry in more demanding situations, both professional and personal. How Coventry deals with the blurring of the lines and his strong moral sense of right and wrong are the hallmarks of this excellent series.

It’s early September and Coventry is called to investigate the death of Angela Pfeifer. He meets the beautiful Trianca Holland – a woman who may be involved to be the prime suspect or the next victim. Coventry is spellbound by her beauty and finds it difficult to keep his professional distance, especially knowing that her background is on the edges of normal society. Freshly minted lawyer Haley Wesson is secretly looking into the disappearance of Renee Rand, a lawyer in the firm that she clerked for over the summer before being hired on in the fall. When Coventry’s case intersects with Wesson’s clandestine investigation, Denver may have a new serial killer on the loose. A series of shallow graves containing women murdered in various brutal ways confirms the suspicions and sets the course for this thirteen day thriller.

Hansen is a master of drawing you into the story early and making you care about his players. At times you may find yourself shuddering as the events play out on the page. Hansen’s characters, the tightly plotted story line, the concise timeline, place the reader in the heart of the action. All of this makes FATAL LAWS a must read. One word of advice, read this book with the lights on."
"Expect the unexpected. That is the best advice I can give before sending you to a bookstore to purchase Jim Hansen's superb suspense novels. FATAL LAWS is the third novel in the author's Bryson Coventry series; perhaps it is the best of the bunch so far and that's not an easy feat to manage. It is not unusual for an author to reach a "sophomore slump" after one or two stunning novels, Jim Michael Hansen proves that he is in a whole other class! FATAL LAWS is amazing!

Denver Homicide Detective Bryson Coventry must inform Tianca Holland that her lover, Angela Pfeifer, is dead. In reality, Bryson knows that Tianca is his prime suspect. However, Tianca's forthright cooperation throws him off guard. Anyone so willing to hand over anything that could be considered evidence is either extremely innocent or desperate to throw detectives off the course. It is not long, however, that additional bodies surface and Tianca is cleared. Now Bryson is back to square one hunting for an illusive serial killer, but he also finds himself in a burgeoning relationship with the bi-sexual Tianca. Bryson struggles to keep his mind on business while the body count rises.

Meanwhile, Haley Wesson, a new attorney with Hart, Sanders & Day, discovers that the lawyer who befriended her during her summer internship has been missing for five months. Haley truly respected Renee Rand and sets off to investigate the disappearance. When Renee's body is discovered, Haley meets with Bryson and offers to help him in any way possible. When Haley's apartment is ransacked, Bryson realizes that Haley could become the killer's next victim if a break in the case does not arise quickly.

Jim Hansen incorporates three viewpoints into his latest novel. Some authors attempt this method and fail, the opposite occurs in FATAL LAWS. The changes are so seamless and fluid that the story becomes more absorbing. Trust me, while you think you may solve the case early, you are probably not even close. The plot spirals towards a stunning conclusion. By the final word, you will be craving more!" Tracy Farnsworth, Roundtable Reviews, www.RoundtableReviews.com

"I wondered with great anticipation what I would find between the covers of Jim Hansen's new work, "Fatal Law." I have come to love detective Bryson Coventry, a Denver homicide detective who is one of the main players in each of our author's great works. Detective Coventry is soon faced with bodies turning up in shallow graves each killed in a different manner. Coventry, certainly faced with a dilemma, must find out if there is more than one killer running around or did just one killer like to change his murderous ways with each new victim. The hunt is on.

It also seems our detective has become quite involved with a very wealthy, beautiful, mysterious lady who herself ,to his dismay, is under suspicion. You can't help but wonder if our detective is falling under her spell and just how good a thing that maybe! Could this woman be our detective's downfall? We'll have to wait and see on that one. The investigation proceeds and we meet a man, Degan, whose soul is black, whose conscience is empty and whose lust is for money. His part in the many murders is only that ,a part, as he gathers up humans as one would pick dust off the floor. Once chosen by him their life is over and one is left to wonder who is behind this sinister work and why?

It is very difficult to tell you the story of this book without revealing the plot so I will go no further in my story summary other than to tell you it is a murderous mystery of the deadliest kind. True to form, our author has once again penned a mystery that will keep your heart racing and your mind struggling to figure out the evil behind the hideous deaths. As usual, and what I have come to expect from his work, he has paid careful consideration insuring every element that makes up a mystery of depth is covered, played upon, exciting your senses and making you hunger for more.

One thing I must mention, this work is somewhat graphic sexually and there maybe those who would be uncomfortable with some of the detailed sexual activity and some of the words used. However, I do believe Mr. Hansen has written this as so to show the mindset of the characters in this work, and believe me these characters are anything but honorable and pure. The description of each character is defined, their physical form noted, their mental attitude given, bringing them vividely to life in your mind's eye.

Ending this review I'd like to say that this is a top-notch mystery read, but more than that, it is a story of a hideous crime that I believe may actually take place in our society and lie hidden under the protection of evil. A page turner, shivering read that will chill you to the bone and one you will silently pray is indeed fiction. --Shirley Johnson, Senior Reviewer, MidWest Book Review, www.midwestbookreview.com
"Attention thriller fans. A tale with lots of suspense. Chills will creep up and down your spine as you read. A cleverly plotted tale that will keep you guessing and looking over your shoulder. With many subplots skillfully woven and kept moving forward until they merge, author Jim Michael Hansen will keep you glued to the pages. A very well-told tale that is guaranteed to satisfy any thriller or suspense fan. You'll be looking for his other books, Night Laws and Shadow Laws. Beware strangers offering you money, don't accept rides or drinks from them and enjoy the story. I sure did."
"Mr. Hansen’s mysteries keep improving with each book he writes. I have found his plots and action to be edgy and twisted. This third novel is no different. Chief of Homicide, Bryson Coventry of the Denver Police Department, becomes involved in a serial killer who is seriously into snuff films. He also becomes emotionally entangled with a gorgeous wealthy lady who happens to be a suspect in a string of murders where women are buried in shallow graves in one location. Bryson, known for his two-color eyes and his unorthodox approach to police work, works alongside his black, female partner (who has her hands full keeping him out of official trouble) and a young lady lawyer who’s too curious for her own good. The author brings his career as a trial lawyer into play to lend high credibility to the details of the legal profession and the police and forensics work. His stories are rich with plausible actions and motives, which he hides well to the very end. This particular novel’s ending will slap you upside your head with a two by four, it’s so unusual. We rated it a solid five hearts."
"The story slowly begins to unwind on day one-September 5, Monday morning. Bryson Coventry rings the bell of the home that belongs to Tianca Holland. There is something she notices about Coventry that anyone sees as soon as they look at him. He has one green and one blue eye. He begins to question her about a body that was uncovered in a shallow grave. What had led him to her? Could she be involved in some way? As you are led to each clue, along with Bryson Coventry, the mystery begins to untangle as to who did what in the story; suddenly the plot develops into a knot. As they tighten, who is after whom? And for what purpose? Slowly and in a nail-biting manner, each day winds down, heightening the suspense to an all-time altitude. Each murder deepens the uncertainty as Fatal Laws gets the adrenaline pumping faster through the system. You, along with Coventry, try to unravel the crime of the century; as one by one, the graves yield the bodies of the murdered victims. Coventry, in his investigation, finds out how each victim died. Some, while still alive, suffered in a grotesque manner before leaving this realm. Find out who else falls prey in this nerve-chilling shocker. Very realistic! Jim Michael Hansen has come up with yet another heart-pounding thriller loaded with murder and mayhem. His unique style of writing keeps the reader captivatingly interested. All the while, each chapter is like a roller coaster ride, that takes you higher and higher for the thrill. Just as suddenly, you come back down with great speed, and swallow your heart back. Then, as each character takes you deeper into the suspenseful thriller, your heart winds up back in your throat again. Great job Mr. Hansen!"
"Bryson Conventry is a gritty, good-looking homicide detective in Denver. Suddenly he has found himself in what appears to be a search for a serial killer. The bodies of four women have been found – all in the same place. Each has been killed a bit differently, but they all seemed to have disappeared at the same time of year. One of Coventry’s suspects is the intoxicatingly beautiful Trianca Holland. She is a woman who likes to live on the edge, without any boundaries. Now Coventry is in her sights and she wants to do more than just answer his questions. Haley Wesson is a fresh out of college law student who is now working at one of Denver’s most prestigious firms. She finds out that one of the top lawyers she previously interned with at the firm is one of Conventry’s victims. Feeling that the lawyer’s murder was more than a coincidence, Haley goes on a fishing expedition that could end up making her another victim. This is the third book in the “Laws” series surrounding the cases of Bryson Coventry. While at times a “series” of anything – whether a movie or book – can sometimes get stale as it continues from one segment to the next, this is definitely NOT the case with this trio of books! Jim Michael Hansen has amazingly kept each book fresh and invigorating. Like the other two, I was taken on a roller coaster ride to solve Coventry’s case, but this one grabbed me faster than the other two did. The familiar characters that I was re-introduced too, were just as intriguing, funny and smart as they were the first time I met them. his book gets the reader to run from page to page the way the detective runs from clue to clue. But be prepared…the last twist at the end even had me shaking my head!"
"FATAL LAWS by Jim Hansen: Third in the Laws series (NIGHT LAWS and SHADOW LAWS) and hopefully there will be a lot more to come. Beautiful women surround Denver homicide detective Bryson Coventry. Unfortunately, some of them are dead. Why are women disappearing and where are they between the time they disappear and when their bodies are found? Since one of the victims is an attorney, lawyers are involved as well. Another well-written combination police procedural and attorney book that keeps ratcheting up the ante. Definitely recommended."
Hansen, Jim Michael. Shadow Laws. Dark Sky Oct. 2006. c.400p. ISBN 0-9769243-4-X [ISBN 978-0-9769423-4-0]. pap. $13.95. While police detective Bryson Coventry investigates what looks to become a serial-killer nightmare, brilliant and beautiful young attorney Taylor Sutton is hired by big-time lawyer Nick Trotter to follow up on a mysterious client who pays Nick a fee but has never asked him to do any legal work. As engaging as the debut Night Laws, this exciting blend of police procedural and legal thriller recalls the early works of Scott Turow and Lisa Scottoline. Hansen is a Colorado attorney.

"Shadow Laws is a fast-moving crime thriller, and Hansen creates powerful suspense, bringing to light fully developed characters and providing hours of entertainment as he rewards the reader with a juicy tale. A nail-biting page-turner, yet another winner from Hansen following Night Laws."
"Wow. This is, how, in short, I would describe Shadow Laws, the second in the line of hard-hitting “Laws” series by Attorney Jim Michael Hansen. Last year while reviewing Night Laws for this Journal I had remarked that I would be on the eager look out for the next Hansen work, and the wait has proved worth it as this new novel is something special, a hell raiser- page turner of a read,- that is, mildly put, spectacular.

Bryson Coventry returns in splendid form, this time around on the hunt for a killer who sends letters to all the TV stations and newspapers announcing the date of his next “visit.” And right on schedule, the killings take place, with the murderer leaving his signature mark at each site.

At the same time, the heroine of the novel, feisty-gutsy attorney Taylor Sutton, is on a hot trail investigating a “client” for fellow criminal lawyer Nick Trotter, a criminal Trotter accepted a retainer from through mail, and one he has never seen face to face. And when this “client” starts bragging about the crimes he has committed and will commit, Trotter feels that he is being set up, with the attorney- client confidentiality clause possibly even leading to his own murder.
The suspense in the novel is spine chilling, even much more than what James Patterson offers in his Alex Cross series, being a fine blend of the psychological thriller genre and the legal thriller genre. A fine, fine read and a highly recommended buy-I'm looking forward to the next one" (5 bolts) -- Narayan Radhakrishnan, New Mystery Reader Magazine, www.newmysteryreader.com.
"SHADOW LAWS by Jim Michael Hansen: In this second of the “Laws” series, Denver homicide detective Bryson Coventry, and beautiful young attorney Taylor Sutton, are separately hunting vicious killers but for very different reasons. A lawyer friend of Sutton’s has a mysterious client, with whom he has only talked by phone, that he thinks is trying to kill him. He has tapes of their conversations that are not conclusive and wants Sutton’s advice as to whether he can ethically turn them over to the police. In the meantime Coventry is looking for a missing woman that he fears is dead. Soon they are in pursuit of a sicko who likes to play games with his victims, the police and attorneys. Eventually the paths of Coventry and Sutton cross and they close in on the truth. Another excellent outing." 11/06 Jack Quick, www.bookbitch.com

5-STARS. "A serial killer has terrorized the residents of Denver. Homicide Detective Bryson Coventry leads the investigation that seems to be always a bit too late, almost as if the culprit somehow knows his every move. Getting a bit paranoid, Bryson wonders if someone in the inner law enforcement circle could be the maniac.

As Coventry digs deeper into understanding the nightmarish world of his adversary, attorney Taylor Sutton also seeks to bring to justice to a diabolical killing machine. Soon their cases interconnect, but in spite of reluctantly comparing their notes, neither is ready for the next kill by a predator whose pleasure is hurting people. As more die, Coventry and Sutton wonder whether they need to cross the legal line both are sworn to uphold into the shadowy realm where their foe makes death the law of the cement jungle.

This is a terrific police procedural- private investigation thriller that grip the audience from the start because the cases feel like they come from headline news. The subplots are fast-paced and merge smoothly into a strong serial killer tale. Readers will enjoy the chilling inquiries made by the intrepid but fearful lead pair; however, afterward will keep the lights on as no one will want to meet who makes the laws in the shadow of night." --Harriet Klausner, #1 Amazon Reviewer

"Denver homicide detective Bryson Coventry returns (Night Laws) in Jim Michael Hansen's Shadow Laws. Art student Ashley Conner is missing and Coventry believes she's been hunted and captured by a vicious killer who kills his targets after playing a game of dice with them. If they lose, they die. Attorney Taylor Sutton has been hired by her long-time friend, Nick Trotter, to locate a mysterious client whom he thinks is a killer.

At first glance, it appears that Coventry and Sutton are investigating separate crimes and killers. But their cases soon intersect. The hunters become the hunted, a person without a name becomes a trusted confidant, and others hide deadly secrets.

Shadow Laws is a thriller that will keep you turning the pages while you remind yourself to breathe. Hansen's ability to build what appear to be separate stories that ultimately intersect is a talent not often seen in the thriller genre. His realistic approach caused me some bad dreams and I found myself making sure my doors were locked and when driving I kept looking over my shoulder. That's a powerful storyteller." --Andrea Sisco, Armchair Interviews, www.armchairinterviews.com
"Hansen's story surges with action like a screaming Ferrari with no brakes. His plot captivates and terrifies, while the characters vault from the page--alive and kicking--dueling with sizzling dialogue. Throughout the tale, Hansen's razor wit snicks and slices with wry cunning, giving the reader a complex, intriguing and satisfying ride." --Mark Bouton, author of Max Conquers the Cosmos and cracks in the Rainbow, www.markbouton.com
"Jim Hansen's books just get stronger and stronger. Shadow Laws is part police procdural, part legal thriller, and completely satisfying." --Mark Terry, author of Dirty Deeds and The Devil's Pitchfork. www.markterrybooks.com

"An accident on an open road in the middle of the night. A heat wave that’s struck Denver and has no end in sight. A police detective with a nose for trouble. An inquisitive attorney who gets an assignment from a good friend. What do they all have in common?

If you’re a lover of crime-noir and thrillers, you’re in for a treat. Readers first met Denver detective Bryson Coventry in Night Laws and he’s back in author Jim Hansen’s excellent second installment, Shadow Laws.

There’s a killer on the loose in Denver and Detective Coventry is having a hard time tracking him down. Bodies are turning up in unlikely places; places that really piss off Bryson. It’s almost as if the murderer is taunting the police department, and the detective in particular.

Taylor Sutton, a tough but beautiful attorney, is asked by a good friend to help track down a guy who left a bizarre message for him. Was it threatening? Or are they reading too much into it? Does the messenger have insights into the murders that are plaguing Denver?

As the story unfolds, we learn that friends may be enemies, killers don’t look like killers, and family members might be accessories to murder.

Move over John Grisham, there’s a new author/attorney in town and his name is Jim Michael Hansen. Writing at a breakneck pace with characters and action that leap off the pages, Shadow Laws will make you laugh with joy one minute, and tremble with fear the next. This is what excellent storytelling’s all about.

Having read tons of crime fiction when I was young, this story really brought me back to the genre in a whole new — and refreshing — way. There is, of course, murder as well as mystery, laughs, snappy dialogue, excellent pacing, great sex, and enjoyable characters."
--Byron Merritt, FWOMP Book Review. www.fwomp.com.

"It all starts with a threatening note and photocopied driver's license that has been sent to many news stations. The note reads: "Next visit: Weekend of July 7."
When the note is brought to the attention of Detective Bryson Coventry, Bryson sets out to make sure the driver's license's owner is okay. Instead, he learns she's been missing for a couple of days. Is a madman on the hunt? When a second letter comes in with the date changed to the 14th, Bryson fears a serial killer is stalking the streets of his small Colorado town.

Attorney Taylor Sutton's day starts off easily enough. It's hot. She's dressed for the weather, not for her job, and she's just been handed an unusual case. Another lawyer, Nick Trotter, hands her a $10,000 retainer with the promise that she will look into a stranger calling himself "Mr. Northwest" whom Nick fears may be a killer. Could Taylor's mysterious stranger and Bryson's killer be one in the same?
As more women vanish, Bryson works tirelessly to solve the crime. Meanwhile, Taylor finds that Nick may not be telling her the truth. Could her life be in danger?
At first appearances, SHADOW LAWS may sound predictable to mystery fanatics. It isn't! I highly suggest pushing that thought out of your head immediately and diving in. One thing I know for certain is that Jim Hansen does not make anything easy. His novels contain more spirals than a corkscrew. From the first page, the reader finds him or herself sucked into an unfamiliar area, but that same town becomes vividly real. You can almost smell the victims' fear. Jim Hansen is a master at creating powerful suspense." --Tracy Farnsworth, Roundtable Reviews. www.roundtablereviews.com
"This is the second crime thriller I have read by this author. The first, Night Laws, was superb and this new one is even better. There must be something in the mountain air around Golden, Colorado just west and north of Denver that produces such fine writers of mysteries and thrillers. Several ones I have reviewed share common backgrounds and talents, and Jim Hansen is no exception. The current story is about unintended consequences and a wily serial killer who takes having his proclivities used by others who need to get rid of a little excess baggage rather resentfully. There are so many twists, turns, and gottcha’s in this story, that it keeps the reader guessing and surprised all the way to the end. It even includes a homicide detective chief who isn’t above a little frontier justice every now and then. The author is especially ambitious to juggle two protagonists—the detective and a smart lady lawyer who seem at times to be working at cross purposes. We rated the author’s second book five hearts of heart stopping action." --Bob Spear, Editor-in-Chief, Heartland Reviews (www.heartlandreviews.com)

“I believe that Jim Hansen did a good job with his first novel, Night Laws, and I expected to feel the same satisfaction . . . But I have to say Shadow Laws blew my socks off! While the first novel left me walking down the road to the wrong conclusion at times, this one kept me on a mystery merry-go-round until the last ten pages. And when the realities became clear, they slapped me in the face like a blast of cold winter air. If you like crime thrillers, this is a must read!” --Kathy Martin, In The Library Reviews.

"One of the marks of a great series writer is the ability to connect the reader with one principle character from one work to another. The character must be strong, he or she becomes the readers recognition of the author's work and one that the reader knows will be the pivot point of the entire storyline. In the same token each story must be able to stand alone and such is the case with the writings of Jim Michael Hansen. To me, this is the mark of an exceptional writer.

Author Jim Hansen has accomplished this task in his second work, "Shadow Laws," by drawing us again into the work and life of Homicide detective Byson Coventry as he begins a hunt for yet another killer of innocent young women. We are comfortable knowing our detective yet if this is our first read of this outstanding author's work, we are drawn into the life of Coventry by his defined descriptive writing of Coventry's character, life and occupation.

In the beginning of our read we are witnessed to a fatal car accident caused by a careless couple who hide their hideous crime; we will not be told how this interweaves with the story at this time, but you will be shocked how important this event becomes. We travel to Denver and meet Taylor Sutton,Esq. and her friend Nick who informs her that he needs her help with a delicate matter.

He has a mysterious client, one who he has only talked with on the phone, although he has taken his retainer. Now he feels this same man is trying to kill him and he doesn't know why. He has taped their conversations and wants to know if it would be against client privileges to take these tapes to the police as he feels he maybe a killer. However, the client never actually admits to killing anyone but the undertone that he has is there. Chilling!

We are then taken into the life of Detective Coventry; a young woman is missing. Perhaps she has only decided to take a few days off away from everyone, but Coventry knows deep in his gut that this is not the case. Soon we are in the midst of the chase for a very sick man who likes to play games with the police, attorneys and the women that he kills. He is a self-made star and a man to be feared, one who is exceptional in leaving no clues, nothing left to chance. Creepy!

The storyline twists and turns, rounds corners and comes to dead-end streets as you desperately try to piece together how all the characters are interwoven with our killer and each other. And it doesn't stop there as our detective becomes involved with a woman who is the neighbor of the missing girl. There is a problem however, as this woman seems to have a secret past, and Coventry, like it or not, must find out what that is. One point I feel I should mention is that this work is a little more racy sexually than the first, however it does not take away from the suspense or storyline of this book. Every character that our author brings into play in this work is important to the story, yet believe me you will not be able to figure out why until the very end.

"Shadow Laws," is fast paced, a work that is ingenious at keeping the reader totally in the dark and absolutely shocking as the truth is revealed. As you read it, mysteries are layered one upon another, characters are interwoven, yet separate, and answers seem to be totally out of reach as the clock ticks away until the final hour where death may well become the victor. A nail-biter, page turner read, one that has all the elements that simply must be there for a top-notch murder mystery . Draw the shades, leave the lights on and double lock the doors as you settle back for a bone-chilling adventure. Outstanding and Exceptional! Highly recommended!"
“Jim Michael Hansen . . . has come up with yet another thriller that will pull the reader right into the spine-tingling story. . . . It is an on-the-edge-of-the-seat excitement that will leave you, the reader, shivering.” –Wanda Maynard, Sime Gen Reviews. www.simegen.com

“Edgy characters, edgy plot, skillful storytelling—Shadow Laws is sure to please legal thriller, psychological thriller and police procedural readers alike.” --L.B. Cobb, author of Splendor Bay and Promises Town. www.lbcobb.com

“Talented Jim Michael Hansen offers us thrills and chills! A killer proves how easy it is to stalk, kidnap and kill young women and evade detection. A tale that will have you looking over your shoulder or unwilling to be out after dark alone. A look at the battle of good versus evil and you’re never sure who’ll win. Original look at the old crime of murder. Exciting reading with a cast of characters you’ll enjoy and some you’ll love to hate.” --Anne K. Edwards, author of Death on Delivery and Journey into Terror. www.mysteryfiction.net

“In Jim Hansen’s latest legal thriller, Shadow Laws, he does it all; vividly evokes a setting, Denver, from its sleazy Colfax Avenue bars to its slick Cherry Creek mansions; brings to life a quirky bunch of characters; and twists a plot so capably that the reader hasn’t a chance to put the book down until it’s finished.” –Anne Ripley, author of the Louise Eldridge gardening mysteries.

Lieutenant Bryson Coventry has his hands full in this second book of the "law" series -- more ways than one. Luckily he has a hotshot and hot-to-trot accomplice filling in the reader and doing the foot work while Bryson plays around. Taylor Sutton is the most atypical 21st century woman you'll ever meet. Bryson might do well to come up for air a little more often or this gal will steal his staring role.

Bryson has more than one mystery to solve though, including the past of a mysterious, but irresistible woman. Not as strong as his first novel, Night Laws, Shadow Laws still delivers a one-two punch and gives us a few more insights into the continuing mystery of Bryson Coventry's character.

Nathan Wickersham is introduced early on as the bad (really bad) guy. He tears through the story like a Vegas pit boss on the hunt for loaded dice. As someone who likes the bad guys, I would have preferred more character study on this character, but as interesting as he was, I wouldn't want to meet him in a even well-lighted alley. Even the villain has a silent and deadly partner who keeps everyone's heads turning to see who's behind them.

The book keeps the reader, and most of the characters, guessing till the last page. It's definitely a good read and will no doubt become a collector's "must have" as the series evolves. Buy it while you can! Don't expect me to give you my copy when you find they've sold out. –Nancy MalcomJimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01234972022475955356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15825387.post-1136827759974914562013-06-12T19:49:00.000-06:002013-06-12T19:49:24.399-06:00Night Laws Book Signings
HERE'S WHAT THE REVIEWERS ARE SAYING ABOUT IMMORTAL LAWS

"Vampires, murders, and sex (oh my). These titillating elements commingle in Hansen’s latest thriller starring Denver detective Bryson Coventry, a randy fellow who spends almost as much time bedding potential witnesses as he does investigating cases. Coventry’s current probe involves the murder of a young woman by a wooden stake through the heart, and little does he know that his latest sexual conquest, a Jamaican beauty named London, has come to Denver to warn blues singer Heather Vaughan that she might be the next victim. Apparently, what Heather and the victim have in common is that they both descend from vampires—that is, from people who were killed ages ago for the belief that they were vampires. Could London really believe that descendants of these unfortunate victims possess powers beyond the realm of human ability? And who could be wanting to see these descendants dead? London is the link that brings Coventry into this dark world, as Heather becomes the pawn in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse. Way creepy, a little tawdry, but boatloads of fun."

"Review: Denver homicide detective Bryson Coventry investigates two separate cases, the disappearance of a local television reporter and the vampire-style murder of woman, a wooden stake driven through her heart, in Immortal Laws, the sixth thriller in this series by Jim Michael Hansen.

After spending an evening out on the town with Bryson, Jena Vernon disappears from her home without a trace. Though Bryson is not a suspect in her disappearance, he is a person of interest and therefore prohibited from officially investigating her high-profile case. That doesn't stop him from unofficially pursuing clues that lead him to similar unsolved cases in other parts of the country where the missing woman was later found murdered. He believes he's in a race against time to prevent the same for Jena. The case to which he has been officially assigned is most bizarre: a woman has been found murdered with a wooden stake embedded in her chest. He doesn't necessarily believe in the existence of vampires himself, but knows all too well that others may and sets out to find this self-styled vampire slayer before anyone else loses their life.

The large cast of characters in Immortal Laws is effectively managed by having them appear, for the most part independently, in accounts from three points of view: that of Bryson, a purported vampire Heather Vaughn, and the vampire slayer Trent Tibadeau. It should be noted that the vampires depicted in this novel are not the stereotypical characters from legend and film; they are fairly typical, everyday human beings who happen to be blood descendants from people considered to be immortal vampires in their day. In a rather oddly compelling way, that the author chooses to represent them as relatively "normal" makes them all the more unusual.

Of the three narratives, that of Bryson's unofficial investigation of the missing reporter is in many ways, and certainly somewhat ironically given he's the series character, the least interesting. A sense of danger or urgency is never established and even though it is presumed that the storylines will intersect at some point, Bryson's unofficial case remains essentially orthogonal to the others up to the final pages and even then never seems fully integrated into the story. His murder investigation is also weakly delivered and is clearly secondary to his search for Jena.

Of far more interest are the narratives of Heather and Trent. These are well-rounded, nuanced, captivating characters that inexorably draw the reader into their spheres. Each takes a cat-and-mouse approach to the other, with their suspense-filled pathways culminating in a climatic encounter, the outcome of which cannot be foreseen. A couple of seemingly minor and tangential subplots and a disappointing final "twist" are all that mar the courses these characters take.

There are many reasons to recommend this book, but in the end, the intriguing, most unusual plot of Immortal Laws is what makes it a worthy addition to this fine series." Mysterious Reviews.
"After reading his latest, it’s clear that Hansen is a writer at the top of his game.Vampires and Bryson Coventry, who could ask for anything more? A might-be vampire is followed by another and warned that “slayers” are after her because she is a bloodline descendant of a vampire. Bryson at the same time, in a different location, is trying recover from the image of a woman’s body with a wooden stake driven through her heart. Bryson and the might-be vampires soon meet and get caught up in a series of unspeakable murders. l can’t wait to recommend the latest book in this continuing series to my friends."

"IMMORTAL LAWS is the sixth book in the LAWS series by Jim Michael Hansen. In this latest edition Hansen dives head first into the supernatural and Coventry faces unusual antagonists in the form of vampires? But this is not a horror novel, but rather a well written story with elements of the supernatural and crime mystery expertly woven into a first rate thriller.

The series continues with Bryson Coventry and his elite Denver Homicide unit investigating a surreal case of a murder victim stabbed through the heart with a wooden stake. When another victim is identified with the same MO, Coventry is not sure what direction to take. Meanwhile, his personal life is being pulled in two opposite directions. On one hand he meets the woman of his dream (again?) and his torn with guilt over the disappearance of a close high school friend, Jena Vernon, who wants to make more of their casual relationship. He now must solve both of these cases, even if he is considered a suspect in one of them.

What is different in this episode of the series is that Hansen has chosen not to have an attorney be the co-lead of the story. Instead we meet Heather Vaughn, an up and coming jazz singer who stirs up the ghost of Billie Holiday and who is now dealing with the information from a stranger that her life is in danger because she has a direct bloodline connection to an infamous vampire. As Coventry’s investigation moves forward, Vaughn may somehow be connected to other dead women. The Slayers, the men who are hunting down and trying to kill these bloodline descendent vampires, are one of Hansen’s more interesting characters. Many red herrings are thrown the reader’s way and add tension to the story line.

After six editions to the series, Hansen carefully manages to keep his stories interesting and enjoyable. In each story we learn a different side to Coventry that makes him more lifelike and likable.

IMMORTAL LAWS is a fascinating blend of multiple genres. For those who think that this is a horror novel will find that Hansen is a master of the thriller form. I would suggest reading this novel during the daylight hours with a garlic necklace on. However, once you start, you will be reading long into the night. Like Coventry, bring some coffee to keep you company."

"Bryson Coventry is back. The Detective in charge of the homicide unit for the Denver Police has found the most beautiful woman he has ever met–again–and he wants her badly. Problem is she is a vampire?

Okay, you say how can a thriller writer – not a horror writer – actually take his main character, throw him into story about immortality and bloodsucking and pull it off? How will this play out? Surprisingly it plays out very well.

Coventry and his partner Shalifa Netherwood have been assigned to a bizarre case. A young woman has been found murdered in an abandoned Denver warehouse, a stake driven through her heart.

Not only is this bizarre, but when another body turns up murdered in the same way, clues and leads begin to spin counterclockwise for Coventry. Not much makes sense, but he stays on the trail. There is an undercurrent to the murders, but he cannot put his finger on it. When an old female friend from high school disappears, and the investigation points to her as being the next victim, Coventry revs the investigation into high gear.

A novel such as this, with a plot that uses fictional characters, I mean vampires, is not something that I would even pick up from the bargain table at the book store. That decision would be my mistake. This is the first book I have read that uses these two disparate genres and blends them together into a very entertaining story. The hero gets the girl, repeatedly as usual, wants to marry her, as usual, fortunately for us, she has other ideas.

Jim Michael Hansen uses this bizarre storyline to drag you into the world of vampires, bloodsucking, and of course lewd and lascivious sex. All of which (Hansen has made this his style) is surprisingly tasteful in a story in which the writer could easily go overboard.

Armchair Interviews Says: Not a horror novel, Immortal Laws is a thriller and a pretty darn good one at that." --Jeff Foster, Armchair Interviews

"Dark nights and fierce thunderstorms. Old legends of creatures that feed on the blood of the living. Yes, I am talking about vampires, those immortal beings that only come out at night. The only way to kill them is by driving a wooden stake through their hearts. Such are the tales saved for books and old movies.

That is until Denver Detective Bryson Coventry is faced with a murder whose victim has a wooden stake driven through their heart. The Detective has no leads until he finds out that the exact same type of murder took place in Paris not too long before his victim was found in Denver. Now Coventry feels like he is getting somewhere. Then one of his old high school friends – who is a t.v. journalist – is kidnapped. And he is the prime suspect in her disappearance.

Then there is Heather Vaughn. Vampires have stepped out of legend and into her life. One stormy night, an intoxicatingly beautiful woman named London tells Heather that she is part of a vampire blood-line, and that vampire “slayers” are after her. Heather really isn’t sure she believes this, until not long after meeting London, she is attacked in her own home and forced to kill one of the slayers. Now Heather realizes she has a target on her back, and she must immerse herself into the world of vampires to save her life.

This is the first time that Jim Michael Hanson has written one of his “Laws” books where one of the main characters was not a lawyer. I think Mr. Hanson did a great job on his sixth novel. (Even making an Alfred Hitchcock-like cameo within its pages.) This story was captivating, erotic and humorous at times. I find a great adventure each time I delve into the world of Detective Bryson Coventry."
*** "Jim Michael Hansen has taken this sixth book, Immortal Laws, to a whole new level. His ability to take the edge-of-the-seat suspense and give it the spine-tingling tension and compelling intrigue it deserves is just a small part of his talent. The rest is perfect enjoyment that the reader gets immersed in page after thrilling page. His ingenuity as a writer keeps improving just like a fine wine." *** --Wanda Maynard, Simegen Reviews

"As I began reading the sixth book, Immortal Laws, in author Jim Hansen's series Laws , I truly wondered what would await me, what devious work, and evil players would I find; I have to say Mr. Hansen definitely surprised me. I would never have imagined I would be confronted by Vampires and wooden stakes, but that is how our brilliant author works, always keeping his work fresh and alive, even though all of her characters aren't. Denver homicide detective Bryson Coventry, one of the main players in the Laws series, is called to investigate a young woman's death, murdered with a wooden stake driven in her heart, the scene is not a pretty one. As Coventry begins to investigate he finds out there are more deaths around the world done in the same fashion. The stakes begin to get high as Coventry's friend, TV personality Jena Vernon is kidnapped and the race is on to save her life and the life of others. That is if Coventry can figure out the connection between them all; time is running out.

We meet Heather Vaughn who has something in common with the dead women. It seems Heather is a descendent of the vampire bloodline and someone is making it their business to hunt down these descendents and kill them, but why? However Heather is luckier than the other bloodline descendents as she has two body guards who seek her out, telling her the story of her heritage, the danger she is in, and offering their help as protectors. However, people and events are not always what they seem to be as you will find in this top-notch read. Try as you may you will definitely not be able see the end coming nor will you put your finger on who is behind all of these murders and why. As always, this novel is creepy, adventurous, mysterious and has all the ghoulish goodies you expect Mr. Hansen to feed you with; you won't be left hungry. I like the way our author brought in other parts of the world, in the USA and outside in the storyline, broaden the scope if you will, of the far reaches of evil that our modern means of travel allows. I also liked the personal touch he gave in this read of Coventry's concern for his friend Jena. Whether you are a die-hard Hansen fan, as I am, or just beginning to read his outstanding novels you won't be disappointed. Par for the course, this one will take you down some dark allies, around some winding bends, into some devious, sick minds and bring you out totally exhausted with the journey only to realize where you knew for sure the read would end up wasn't even close. Great read! Recommended to the highest! Well done Mr. Hansen!" --Shirley Johnson, Senior Reviewer, MidWest Book Review

"Do you believe in vampires and other dark-side beings? Talented author Jim Michael Hansen will keep you reading as you join homicide detective Bryson Coventry in a case guaranteed to have you sleeping with a light on. Vampires seem to have invaded his world.

A young singer is told by a woman from Jamaica that she is descended from vampires and because of this, she is in danger from a group called the Slayers. It calls for courage to stay and face the killers. Will she be able to do it or will she become a victim or will she run?

Bryson Coventry must deal with a new type of killer when a victim is found with a stake through her heart. Was she a vampire or was her killer just adding his own twist to murder?

Coventry's investigation bring him into contact with the Jamaican woman and he feels drawn to her. Can he separate his emotion from his hunt for the murderer as she plays more than one role in this well told tale?

Talented author Jim Michael Hansen will have you wanting to tell people not do go down that dark street, to avoid going out at night. And you will willingly follow them into those dark streets just to see what happens. Just be careful and consider wearing a garlic necklace to keep vampires away.

This is a tale that will have you rechecking your windows at night and looking over your shoulder for those mysterious fliers with fangs. Guaranteed to keep you reading, this is one of the best thrillers I've read yet. A different type of thriller deftly laced with horror that will have you looking for Mr. Hansen's other books.

Enjoy. I certainly did."
"IMMORTAL LAWS by Jim Hansen: (2008 Release) Blues singer Heather Vaughn has the same bloodlines as a young woman who is found with a wooden stake driven through her heart – both are descended from men who were reputed to be vampires. In this, his sixth outing, coffee drinking serial womanizing Denver homicide detective Bryson Coventry is under suspicion because of the disappearance of childhood friend Jena Vernon, now a local television news reporter, last seen with Coventry. Heather is trying to stay alive while helping to find a group of slayers that appear to be roaming the world to eradicate vampire descendents. Coventry doesn’t believe in ghosts, or vampires, or werewolves, or any of that stuff, but he does believe in himself “Just because I don’t know what I’m doing doesn’t mean I’m wrong.” Another solid police procedural with only a touch of “woo-woo”, that doesn’t interfere at all with the action in this modern-day thriller rooted in ancient and deadly rites. All in all, another very satisfying read." --Jack Quick, Bookbitch Reviews Jimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01234972022475955356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15825387.post-26885556762154763842013-06-12T19:47:00.004-06:002013-06-12T19:47:35.290-06:00BANGKOK LAWS - Book Reviews.
Back Cover Copy: As Denver homicide detective Bryson Coventry finds himself entangled in the collateral damage of a killer who uses the entire world as his playground, newly licensed attorney Paige Alexander lands her very first case —a case that could possibly destroy the most powerful law firm in the world; a case involving a deadly, high-stakes international conspiracy of terrible proportions; a case that started in Bangkok but will not end there.

HERE'S WHAT THE REVIEWERS ARE SAYING SO FAR.

"Bangkok Laws is the fifth book in the Laws series featuring detective Bryson Coventry. Hansen is expert in delivering novels rich with suspense, leaning toward the dark side and exploring not just the law but the complexities of life and human nature.

This installment, like others in the series, is told from different distinctive POV including a brutal glimpse into the mind of a killer. Hansen does an excellent job with his villains, and in this book it is obvious they can come in all shapes and sizes. Various plots weave through the story, and though the reader knows all are connected, the pace and substance of the book keep the reader guessing up until the ultimate reveal.

In this installment, Coventry makes a promise to a dead woman, something he swore he would never do again; he can only imagine the convoluted intrigue he will be entering. Along with solving the death of the woman, Coventry must find her missing friend. Another woman dies in strange circumstances, and meanwhile Coventry finds himself falling in love.

Ja’von, Coventry’s new love interest, is almost improbably beautiful, and readers will be immediately suspicious of her placing herself in the way of Coventry. Paige Alexander is an attorney with no cases hired by Ja’von to take on a top law firm - an almost impossible task, but Paige is somewhat seduced by the glamorous Ja’von, who is at the heart of the story, though just in what way will remain to be seen.

The connections to Bangkok seem sketchy at first. A pilot arriving home from Bangkok is brutally stabbed, Ja’von claims to have been a victim of sex slavery in the Thai capital, and she wants justice. How does this relate to the deaths of the two women and the kidnapping of one, all of whom have no connection to Bangkok? Will Coventry work it out, or will Paige and Ja’von? Will they even survive what they get themselves into?

This book has it all: high-stakes international intrigue, a green attorney taking her first case, lots of falling in lust and love, the scent of corruption, and of course, cold-blooded murder. There is no question that Hansen writes suspense and drama very well. His bad guys are truly bad but totally believable. All the cast are shrewdly written and are individuals. The plot is cleverly written, and all the twists and turns take the reader on a roller coaster ride while showing them everything they need to know to solve the crimes and join the dots.

Yet while some claim this to be Hansen’s best to date I disagree. I reviewed Night Laws and found it superior to this outing. I find Coventry not nearly as well rounded in the novel. His falling in love with Ja’von so easily seems improbable, and his caffeine addiction seems to be taken to new heights with coffee mentioned more times then I care to count. Even his interactions with other characters, while amusing at times, appear to take on a different tone. His partner, whom I identified in Night Laws as a strong character whom I had hoped to see develop, seems to be wasted here, being reduced to the woman he wonders about sleeping with if he did not work with her.

Still, I would not want to deter readers from the series. Hansen has an excellent writing style and many fans of this hard hitting series. I have not read every book myself and still intend to check them out.

I should make mention of the little joke Hansen has with his readers in this book (and I am not just talking about all the characters reading his books). Watch out for Hansen’s homage to Hitchcock and Coventry’s reaction, which is truly priceless." --Kellie Warner, Curled Up With a Good Book, www.curledup.com

"*** Returning is homicide detective Bryson Coventry, whose latest female conquest, Ja’Von, has the potential to become more than a mere sexual dalliance, in spite of the fact that she seems somehow to be connected to a twisted racket involving sex slaves in Bankok. Ja’Von, meanwhile, has hired newbie attorney Paige Alexander to take on Denver’s largest large firm to try to right an enormous wrong done to her. Paige, desperate to make a name for herself as a lawyer, takes on the case, intrigued by its David-and-Goliath proportions. Part of what makes this thriller thrilling is that you sense there to be connections among all the various subplots; the anticipation of their coming together keeps the pages turning at a deservedly quick clip. Not for the faint of heart, this one is recommended for those ready to endure its heartpounding, gory ride." --Booklist (February 15, 2008 edition)

"Denver homicide detective Bryson Coventry investigates a number of seemingly unconnected crimes in Bangkok Laws, the fifth mystery in this series by Jim Michael Hansen.

The first crime, a murder, seems fairly routine, a man repeatedly stabbed in the back. Obviously a crime of passion, yet there are no suspects. Then a woman is killed, her neck broken, and left outside a home she was preparing to clean. Inexplicably, her roommate has disappeared. Then another woman, the daughter of a prominent television personality, vanishes. Though nothing connects any of these crimes together, Bryson begins to suspect that his new lady friend, Ja'Von Deveraux, is somehow involved. She has hired a recently licensed and inexperienced lawyer to sue the largest and most prestigious law firm in Denver, a legal mismatch if ever there was one. And then a common thread emerges: Bangkok.

Bangkok Laws alternates between three points of view: Bryson Coventry and his investigative team, Ja'Von and her lawyer Paige Alexander, and a contract killer named Dylan Joop. Since there are no obvious connections between them, it could be confusing to the reader exactly what's going on and why. Furthermore, the pace of the plot is relentless with never much time spent on one point of view before moving on to the next. Yet the author handles it all brilliantly with an amazingly deft touch. Improbable coincidences in another context seem perfectly reasonable here ... or at least credible. A suspense novel to be sure and there is some misdirection, but most readers will no doubt figure out well before the end how the various plot threads come together. This in no way, however, lessens this thrilling adventure.

In a nod to, and with respect for, Alfred Hitchcock, the author inserts himself in a scene or two, and titles of his books seem to appear on most of the character's bookshelves or nightstands at one point or another. This, like much of the rest of Bangkok Laws, is more clever than contrived and ultimately works as pure entertainment." --Lance Wright, Mysterious Reviews

"Pilot Ewing barely makes it back to the States from Bangkok when he is stabbed to death. At the same time a woman is following detective Coventry . He calls his partner for the 411 on the follower. He discovers her to be a PI. He stops at a bar. She follows him in. He motions for her to join him. She feigns that she needs to buff up her surveillance skills. As they sit there, he places his hand on her leg and she places it higher right when his phone goes off, a body. She asks if she might join her. Later that night they make love, and he falls for her. Ja’Von is her name.

In another part of town a new attorney unable to find work as such is waiting tables. When a tray falls dropping a ton of dishes nearly no one helps her untill a lady steps up. Paige warns the lady to be careful the pieces are sharp, but she says it with tears. Then she adds I shouldn’t be here. Where should you be? Asks Ja’Von. Being an attorney, says Paige. Ja’Von says then I have a job for you. Later she tells an incredible tale of sexual slavery in Bangkok and how she escaped, barely. She continues with how she had been set up by a law firm in Denver and she wants to sue them. Paige says fine and the games begin.

In the meantime, a young woman, with Merry Maids is kidnapped.

As Coventry and JaVon’s relationship blossoms, more deaths occur. Paige is almost murdered and random acts may not be random. Is everything connected to the slavery ring in Bangkok ? Is there something more going on? Who is pulling the strings?

Jim Michael Hansen has written another book in his “Laws” series. Bangkok Laws is a fast paced thriller. It keeps you on the edge of your seat. It is a long book but I read it one sitting because I had to know what was going on and who was doing what to who. There are many characters and when you first begin the book it is a little rough to follow but before long you are up and running with all the players. I enjoyed the book however I was a little disappointed in the ending. It was more of a wrap up rather than a play out. That being said, it was an excellent read!
On a scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 4.7."

As usual, Coventry is working on more than one case and they begin to collide as the body count rises.

"*** BANGKOK LAWS is another excellent mystery and I find myself amazed at both how quickly the author can write and how he's yet to hit that dreaded "sophomore slump." Few authors can handle what Jim Hansen has managed--this is his fifth novel and he's still "wowing" his readers." --Tracy Farnsworth, Roundtable Reviews

"In BANGKOK LAWS Jim Hansen has once again challenged his protagonist to new heights. BANGKOK LAWS is the 5th book in the highly regarded LAWS series and the best to date. *** BANGKOK LAWS is Hansen’s best effort to date.

"*** From the seedy sex dens of Bangkok to the crystal clear skies of Denver, Jim Michael Hansen takes you on a voyage into a very dark world of sexual slavery, and ultimately, cold-blooded murder. *** Jim Michael Hansen has a unique ability to tempt the reader with a trail of crumbs that ultimately sucks you into the spellbinding vortex he has created in Bangkok Laws.

"*** You will find a storyline that is probably more real-to-life than you care to imagine, strong believable characters, both hideous and lovable, and a knock-out conclusion, that trust me, you definitely will never see coming. Another top-of-the-line winner for Mr. Hansen and one you do not want to miss.
--Shirley Johnson, Senior Reviewer, MidWest Book Review

"*** Jim Michael Hansen is about to unleash another electrifying laws book that will keep you, the reader, turning page after spine-chilling page to see what lies around the next curve. So get ready to follow Coventry through a never-ending roller coaster ride of events that will lead through a fantastical situation, along with the beautiful women who are involved up to their necks."
--Wanda Maynard, Simegen

"*** Avid readers have their favorite authors and this one has become one of mine.

"Thirty four year old Bryson Coventry, head of Denver’s homicide unit and serial womanizer, has survived four previous outings but this one may be his undoing, as he becomes involved in the collateral damage of a global killer.

"*** Highly recommended as a tale you will have to finish once you begin to read.
The manuscript of Ancient Laws was completed on February 4, 2008. It is the 8th thriller in the Laws series and the first one set totally outside Denver--in Paris, Cairo and Luxor. It also introduces Paris detective Fallon Le Rue, who will branch out into her own series.

Laws readers who have come to expect a white-knuckle, hold-on-tight thriller from start to finish will be blown away by this book. Bryson Coventry is at his absolute best.

"In this new book of author, Jim Hansen's Law series, we find our beloved Denver homicide detective, Bryson Coventry in France. Coventry desperately seeking a killer, one who through a blunder of his own, has taken another young girls life. making this personal. He only hoped the police in Paris would cooperate with him.

We meet Jade Lafayette, a 23-year old beauty who works for France's largest law firm. At least she does until she is pulled into a quest to help uncover the secret her uncle had found. This is when she meets the beautiful Alexandra and her life is changed forever. Her uncle, Remy, an archeologist has been murdered and buried with him is the answer to a find worth an incredible amount of money and historical value. A find that many would kill to have, and do. Nicholas Ringer is introduced to us, a man with money, a man with power, a dangerous man. One who will play a cunning part in this adventure.

Fallon Le Rue is a beautiful woman, and is the detective that our beloved Coventry is put in contact with in Paris. Sparks fly between them from the beginning. Together Coventry and Fallon piece together information from the murders in America and the ones happening in Paris to see if the killer has come to France. It appears he has. One girl is missing and the hunt is on to find this invasive killer. Coventry and Fallon come up with a plan to use Fallon as bait, but will that also cost her her life, as it did with another young woman? The plot thickens.

We meet other unsavory characters such as Marcel Durand, a private investigator, but one who appears to have many dark secrets. What part does he play in the darkness that is weaving its web. Our author takes us to Egypt where Jade and Alexandra search out the secret that Remy had found, but they are not alone and they battle man and reptiles for their very lives. Creepy. What a ride.

Mr. Hansen, in only the way he can, pulls the events happening with Jade and Alexandra into the killing of young Amanda Peterson and Tracy White. It is amazing how expertly our author is able to weave together so many characters, so many events in so many places, and keep the story flowing. You find yourself whirling around trying to piece together the information given to you to solve the layers of mysteries that are within this read. Just how do they connect? Where and what are the missing links? As always, I found this to be a top-notch read, with characters that lure you in, mysteries that run deep, and romance over the top. Definitely a book you do not want to miss reading. Thanks Mr. Hansen for another one of a kind." --Shirley Johnson, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review
"In this latest crime solving adventure, Bryson Coventry a Denver homicide detective finds himself in Paris hunting a killer he has been after for a long time. The killer had killed a young woman, gouged out her eyes and then placed then back in her head facing her brain. There had been a witness and now she was dead, in Paris, with her eyes gouged out and replaced facing her brain. Bryson rushes to Paris where his secret witness had moved in her own witness protection program. But where is her roommate? Did the killer take her as some sort of hostage or game? Bryson meets with his French counterpart, a very beautiful and sexy Detective, Fallon Le Rue. Fallon is willing to help Bryson in anyway, but she has her own agenda and is seeking a cold case, that of the murder of call girl who had been smothered with a plastic bag.

Back in the States, Jade Lafayette a young woman who works in a law firm receives news that her uncle Remy, an archeologist has been murdered, supposedly in a home invasion. Then her home is ransacked. That’s when she meets Alexandra who whisks her away to save her life. Who is Alexandra and what does she want? Who killed Remy and why?

Bryson updates an old sketch of the killer and Fallon as bait. Will they catch the killer? Did Fallon make a mistake putting herself out as bait? What secret is Fallon hiding? And what does Jade have to do with Bryson’s case?

Bryson travels the world in an attempt to catch a killer. To find out if he is successful, and the answer to these questions you’ll have to read ANCIENT LAWS.

Jim Michael Hansen has created a fascinating series for his lawman Bryson who pushes the envelope at times, follows his own rules, yet cares about the people he deals with. Bryson is the kind of guy that if you met him at first you’d be put off but then you adore him. His flaws grow on you till they become lovable character traits and you realize as flawed as he is, he has the best interest of others at heart, Mr. Hansen’s other cast of characters are colorful and not easily forgotten. His descriptions are vivid; their behaviors are distinct and purposeful.

Mr. Hansen’s writing is so strong and vibrant you feel as if you are right there with his characters. For example, as you read you can feel the ever so slight sway of the houseboat. You can hiss of a snake.

Once again, Mr. Hansen has written an excellent book! On a scale of 1 to 5, I give it a 5." --Cynthia Lea Clark, Psy.D for Mystery Lovers Corner

"There are a lot of ways to describe Jim Michael Hansen’s ‘Laws’ series, but the best one is intriguing. “Ancient Laws” is the 7th book in the series. None of the luster from the earlier editions has been lost.

As always, the story revolves around Denver Homicide Detective Bryson Coventry. He is chasing down a killer who had eluded him in Denver. Coventry does not like loose ends. So much so, he puts himself on a plane to Paris. A similar type of murder has occurred there recently. (Coventry hates flying as much as he loves coffee – he can’t survive without coffee.) Arriving at the Paris Police Department, he meets Detective Fallon Le Rue. Lucky for the Denver cop, Le Rue does not mind bending the rules a bit - especially if it solves a case.

As the two search for clues to find Coventry’s killer, it comes to light that the Paris victim was the witness in the Denver case. Not only that, but the victim’s roommate is missing. Now the two Detectives head into a complicated quagmire that leads them all the way to Cairo and back.

This has to be one of the best novels in Hansen’s Bryson Coventry series. The intrigue starts at page one, then twists and turns to the end. So much so, that for most of the book, I thought that the author had changed his style a bit, and I was actually reading three individual thrillers. There were of course times I would tell myself that that is just not the way Hansen works, but then reading on a for a few pages, again I would think that none of the situations playing out before me were connected.

In keeping with past novels, Hansen’s characters and dialogue are very real. There is one difference, though. In this story, we find that Conventry has to take a backseat to another detective. He gets to plan strategy, but he cannot take the lead. Well, not at first, anyway.

Overall, this is another great crime thriller. All I can say is…just keep em’ coming!" --Kathy Martin, In the Libarary Reviews

"Life is anything but boring for Denver Homicide detective Bryson Coventry. In the 8th installment of the thrilling Laws series, Coventry travels to Paris to pursue another dangerous killer in ANCIENT LAWS. To help him with his investigation, Coventry meets his match in the alluring Fallon La Rue, a Paris police detective. Hansen plans to spin off La Rue into her own series called the EDGE SERIES

Can you find good coffee outside of Denver? ANCIENT LAWS is the first in the LAWS series to be based entirely outside of the United States. The main story line takes place in Paris and leads to places in Egypt and the famous archeological sites in the Valley of the Kings. Coventry is in pursuit of a murder who may be involved in murdering people around the world. The only description of the killer, he looks like a caveman, offers up a lawyer, a cab driver , a club dj and an archeologist. As Coventry and La Rue soon find out that their investigation is not new. The ghosts of the past are finding their way into the future. This is much more than a standard thriller, there is an age old mystery to solve that drives all the characters to risk it all and find their fate.

Hansen’s new creation, Fallon La Rue, is serious and dedicated detective. In many ways she is very similar to Coventry. She is insightful and calculating and is not ready to let anyone close to her. She thinks about the investigation first and herself second. Then, there are the differences: what is desperately trying to conceal about her life? Coventry falls for her instantly. There is infatuation, lust, desire, and then he sees her intelligence. She has the cold, cunning skills to trap a killer. Coventry has never been more confused in his life.

ANCIENT LAWS is the type of mystery/thriller that makes for a great summer read. Hansen is his best when developing the back story and having his characters face their desires and fears. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the series so far is how the secondary characters help tell the story and let the reader try to figure out what is happening. The red herrings are plenty in the novel and Hansen has you guessing up to the end. As many of the treasures in this book have years of dust covering their value, Hansen has created a pager burner of a story that won’t collect any time soon." Aldo T. "ANCIENT LAWS by Jim Hansen: (2009) I have been a fan of the Laws series from the outset. Business interests and relatives in Denver have permitted me to spend enough time there that I feel I know the city. (If you visit the city, get someone to direct you to Gordo’s for great Mexican food served family style.) Situated between the fertile flat farmlands and the United States version of the Alps, Denver has always been a quirky place where women wearing boots attract less attention than men wearing ties. Jim Hansen has managed to capture this spirit completely. Bryson Coventry, his 34 year old serial womanizing, pickup truck driving, coffee drinking fanatic head of Denver’s homicide unit fits perfectly into the local scene. In this, the 8th of the Laws series, however, Coventry is away from his native Denver tracking a lead on a year-old murder. In Paris, he meets detective Ja'Venn Le Rue, whom Hansen advises will ultimately be the subject of her own Edge series. If they come even close to the quality of Laws, they will be great. In the meantime Coventry and Le Rue are pulled into a deadly game that will lead them from Paris to Cairo to the Valley of the Kings, a game involving ancient tombs, lost treasures, and archeological murders." -- Jack Quick, Bookbitch Reviews
"When it comes to thrillers filled with suspense, nobody weaves together a crime novel as richly as Jim Michael Hansen. "Author Jim Hansen has become a master storyteller, writing tales that rival the best. His latest book, Ancient Laws, will keep you on the edge of your seat to the very last word. I was impressed with his newest creation and am wondering what this author has up his sleeve for his next novel." --Patricia A. Rasey, author of Fear the Dark and Facade.

"Another winner! For thriller and dark mystery fans, talented author Jim Michael Hansen has produced a story you won't be able to put down until you turn that last page.

A weird murder takes Bryson Coventry to Paris to see if their weird murder is the work of the same killer. He meets French detective named Fallon Le Rue and falls head over heels into lust once again.

Together they chase down clues to a killer who looks like a caveman. One such man is a lawyer who turns up to convince them of his innocence. Another is a D.J. and a third is a cabdriver and sometime hitman. The fourth is an archaeologist. Will one of them be the killer Coventry seeks? The question is which one.

Added complications deepen the mystery in the persons of two women, Jade and Alexandra, who work together to find a lost pharoah's treasure and the man who murdered Jade's uncle for information to the treasure.

Are the two cases related? How? What do they have in common besides all four and a killer arrive in Luxor.

An exciting tale that will keep you on the edge of your seat as vipers make attacks on visitors to thier valley, an airplane goes into the river, and a thousand thrills will permanently fix goosebumps to your skin.

A well told tale with a masterful blend of intrigue, murder, greed, lust, and that little touch of horror will keep you reading. You'll want to read all of this author's tales. They get better and better."

Enjoy. I certainly did." --Anne K.
